Buying laptop for technophobe parents, best quality and service/support/warranty?

Hi all, my parents' 7-year old WinXp pc desktop finally gave up the ghost, lost a drive, and they've decided to replace it with a laptop instead of replacing the drive. I haven't paid much attention to this space recently and am relearning it. The main concern is that we buy from a company that makes durable, high-quality gear and offers the best warranty and support, since my parents are definitely not diy'ers. Are there any pc/laptop companies now that are known for really good quality, warranty, and support? Thanks!

Thinkpads, Dell Latitudes, Apple Macbooks, and hp business notebooks offer very good warranty. On the latitudes and the hp they offer standard 3 year warranty with an extra of 100 bucks more for on site service which means they go to your house the next day to fix the machine. Stay away from brick and mortar stores like best buy and circuit city because if you get their extended warranty and you have to take your pc in for a repair you wont see it for at least 2 weeks. I know because I worked at best buy geek squad a while back when i was finishing bachelors. If I had to pick 2 brands I would go for Dell and apple but you will end up paying a bit more for applecare. My office gave me a Dell Latitude D630 and I love it. Very sturdy machine and looks better built than the inspirons.

i just bought a inspiron 1501, and yes, by all accounts this thing is UGLY. its black, white and silver. just picture it. it seems like they just used leftover trim parts that werent even the right colors when they designed these things.

however, its rock solid. much stronger then my old ibm t40. for a no-frills machine, with 4+ hour battery life under heavy use i give it a 8/10.

get an asus...cheaper than others (comparable specs) and 2 year global warranty where their CS is great to deal with! IM me on AIM at lazylikeacow and ill help you out on comp decisions...im not a grandmaster or anything but im proficient

what is the budget? you can probably go pretty low end with them... as far as durability goes, it depends if they will actually use it as a laptop, or just set it on a desk and never move it to whether or not they want to get something like an ibm or latitude...
