Make sure they are snug around your foot. You don't want your foot wobbling around while skating. Also make sure they are comfortable, you don't want to be in a ton of pain. Pretty much like shoes.

I want some advice on any particular standouts that I should look into, and perhaps more importantly, any rotten apples. I've read from more than a few that Bauer's Vapour series is truly a substandard product.

Currently, I'm leaning towards CCM's 692 tacks. My feet are wide and CCM makes 'em a bit wider. The 692 seems like a good balance between price and features.

Zim, do you play hockey?

CCM's tend to run wider IMO, that is why I have always bought Bauer skates; a snug fit keeps the blisters away if you wear them weekly IMO. Unlike shoes & figure skates which are made of soft leather all around, a "close" fit w/ hockey skates has been better for me DigDug. As for playing hockey, it's been years  , but I like the ankle support hockey skates offer, I hope this helps a bit :)

I also used to lean more towards Bauer skates. Something I have learned over the years is that it is worth investing money into a good pair of hockey skates. It really does suck when you start having blisters, or the skates start feeling uncomfortable after 20 minutes of playing time. :(

That's what I think. Therefore, I'm going to drop like $200-300 and get a great pair that will last me for awhile. I'm staying away from all the "light" skates with plasticized construction. I think I'll get the CCM 692 and get them heat-molded. Apparently its works great with their F-I-T technology, which allows for a "Gapless" fit.

I have Bauers myself (goalie skates) they're great for me. Just don't buy them online! That's advice point #1 (unless you test out your size in the exact same ones at a B&M store).

I'm going the way of CCM Tacks.

Graf is just too expensive for my skating/playing desires.

can't go wrong

Fixed!

I gotta get me a pair of heat molded tacks.. I've got older non-heat molded tacks, and they're great too.
