Hi group,

I want to buy HL2. I found this auction on ebay which is selling a CD-Key. I understand that you can download the game directly from Steam. Is this auction safe? Will everythng work? I'm assuming the seller is just selling a "CD-key" which I enter at the Steam site to set up an account and download the game?

Is there any advantage to buying the retail version of the game with disks? Only thing is - they seem to be around $40-$50 everywhere now.

Thanks in advance,
Aaron

Don't do it. There's no way to tell if he's already used the cd-key and you can't transfer steam accounts. It is not safe at all.

Make sure you get the cd with it. Otherwise there's no guarantees. Basically I would not do it regardless if I get the cds or not off of ebay. Just buy it from steam or a reputable online store, or even a reputable trader here on FS/T. But if you get it from FS/T, make sure you get the cds with it, since you can reset the account with the cds, and if you only got the cd key and the seller sends in the cds to reset the account, you are screwed. If a seller was selling an account bought off of steam, that is a little different, and I'm not sure how you could go about that.

Thanks for the responses guy. I decided to leave the EBay auction alone.

I actually bought a Bronze coupon (I guess it came with some AMD A64 bundles?) for $25. I didn't get the CD's, but I don't think anyone does with that deal. Regardless, I'm downloading the games now so everything seems to be ok.

Thanks for the help!
