Buying Help - Canon S2 IS or Panasonic Lumix FZ5 ?

I got my S2 ~$350; definitely more features than the Panny. If you're buying for just pictures, you may have a dilemma. If you want to shoot movies too, get the Canon. Wait around for the next deal.

Welp, I ended up getting the FZ20. I had to pull the trigger this evening as I had a BIG coupon/certificate expiring and the purchase place was out of the S2, with no promise date any time soon. Kinda sucked as the S2 seems to be in stock everywhere ... else.

Either way, I don't think I'll be too disappointed.

Thanx for all the replies !!!

Already have plenty of SD on hand ... a 512MB and a 1GB. Now I just need a good price on a spare battery pack, $75 is crazy !

Wow This would be a major buying point for me, I hate cameras with proprietary (sp.) battery packs. The S2IS uses AA!!

AA nimh can get pricey too since you ahve to buy a charger (talking about a decent charger..). regardless... sterlingtek.com has some decent 3rd party batteries.. mine are great. significantly cheaper, and if I lose em or something, not too big of a deal.

Yeah, both batteries can get expensive. But my point about the battery being proprietary in my previous post wasn't about price. If all of your proprietary batteries discharge, you have to wait until one charges again. On the other hand I can go out and get some alkalines or lithium ions and start shooting again. This actually happened when my wife and I were in Maui a couple months ago. We went out on a daytrip on the Hana Highway, but we had forgotten to charge all 8 of our AA's. So we took a quick stop at WalMart and picked up a set of LION's and were good to go for a couple days. We would have been SOL if we had the Panny.

blah, who buys a camera for movies.
I didn't think it was that important, but it is. I've all but abandoned my minidv camcorder now that I hvae my S2. While I can't take hour long movies with it (more like just a couple minutes) that's actually my movie-shooting pattern. I tend to take short quick movies for posting on a webpage than long movies that get replayed back on a TV. Although I can playback my S2 movies on TV if I wished. Plus I don't have to lug around both the camera and the camcorder when I'm on vacation or wherever.

I was considering the Panasonic myself but the Dell deal when the S2 IS first came out was way too good to pass up.
In my opinion it's really a tossup between the two. Both are great cameras. You'll probably be quite happy with the Panasonic and never feel like you missed out on anything.

You will love the FZ20. The battery life is actually pretty good.
The camera feels like a camera instead of some cheap, compact type of camea..

Precisely !!!

But seriously now, quit it you guys ... or I may end up owning both of these cameras 😀

for the price of both the cameras, you could own a D70 or rebel xt kit 🙂

I was about to get the Panasonic *last year* I ended up going with the Fuji S5000, it was less expensive. I really wish I had shelled out and got the Panasonic though. Everything Panasonic makes seems to be incredible, my Panasonic Head Unit in my car is amazing.

I think it's down to either the FZ5 for $315 or the FZ20 for $390 ...
I'm thinking of pulling the trigger fairly soon on the FZ5, however I can't find it any cheaper than $348 (plus tax for me) from Amazon, free ship. I've glanced online, but didn't really see any auctions that I anticipated to end around $315.

Where did you find this camera at $315 please?
