I am looking for a hard drive. 40gb, 7200 rpm, Ide interface. I was looking at the IBM, seagate barracuda 4, maxtor diamond max, and western digital. I have heard that IBM drives can have some reliability issues, even though they are fast. I want a fast drive, but I also want a reliable one. Are there any major differences between these and the brands or would any drive be a safe bet?

I've owned several WD's, 2 seagates and an IBM deskstar. Two of my WD's developed products, one after about 3 years and the other after about 7. The deskstar is about 6 months old and hasn't developed problems yet. It is very fast.

I would recommend maxtor or seagate. But there is always a possibility that your drive will die, IBM has been hit hard with a lot of drive failing but mine is doing fine almost a year old now. I don't hear of much problems from maxtor or Seagate now adays, and WD seems to be getting better.

If you want a fast and affordable drive get the Maxtor d740 drive.
Any drive can have something go wrong with it. Maxtor offers very good warranties so I would suggest them.

if you read some of the reviews, you'll see that the IBM 120GXP drive is faster than the Maxtor and Seagate drives. DO NOT buy an IBM 60GXP or 75GXP. There's a class action lawsuit against IBM because of the reliability probs with those drives. However, IBM changed the drive when they issued the 120GXP. I have one and love it. I have replaced several 60GXP's. I have yet to hear anything bad about the 120GXP's reliability. I think IBM learned from it's mistake and isn't about to commit it again.

The 7200rpm Maxtor HD's offer a great 3 year warranty. Plus they have great benchmarks at a good money value price.

Any HD can go bad and devlope troubles, but I hav found that the new Maxtors to bee very good and fast and can be bought for a good price.
