Just like buying a PC in the first place, it's helpful to decide exactly what it is you plan to do. There are folks for whom the word "upgrade" would mean get something quieter for their living room's HTPC, for others, they want to play Far Cry at its max settings, and have an unlimited budget, so $500-plus is acceptable.

Before any answer is really worth offering, you choose some criteria, such as how much money you are willing to spend, what games, if any, you want to play, what high demands graphic software do you run? (Like Photshop for example.) Unless you are going very high dollar, the cpu doesn't really matter, except if it's extremely old and slow, which I do not think should be the case in that MB you have.

For an AGP interface, the Geforce 6600GT's continue to sit on the point of max perfromance for minimum expense (Bang for Buck).

My answer would vary depending on what CPU is in it. With a 865 chipset, I can assume it is not a Prescott chip. Still, what's it's stock clock?
