Buying golf clubs for a woman

ho boy, now know what my girl wants for christmas. Of course I said "we need to talk to your pro before I buy you anything." She's only played about two seasons but has reached "I don't like this club, I like this club" type of feel. She's taller and stronger than most women and enjoys my mens clubs. Not to mention she loves my hybrid and driver. Her swing speed is pretty fast for a woman.

What does a modern women's set look like? I see a big shift towards hybrids/woods and few irons for women. I'm so used to a standard set of irons 3-PW and 3 woods...but things have changed especially for women on the hybrid development.

Any suggestions on what to look for in terms of clubs that would fit her? no brands, just design. She loves my hybrids and I see a lot of beginner sets being mostly hybrids/small woods.

i think golf magazine recently published a cover story on the "perfect set" by handicap.

it wouldn't be a bad place to start to see which designs were ranked highest in their "tests"

Thanks. I'll pick it up, but am wary of any magazine reccomendations.

I'm not gonna get her anything until she hits with it first with her pro. It just seems like she really likes my mens clubs better, but I know a woman's bag is going to be radically different thatn a man's.

I'd love to give her a:
nice 3, 5, 7 wood
nice hybrid 3i,5i,7i

Get fitted, demo some clubs, take some lessons. If she doesn't really have a consistent swing or big problems with the swing, first get lessons, then get clubs once the swing is in order.

She's already got 12+ lessons under her belt. Damn girl is telling me "I can feel the clubhead lagging behind my hands with these womens clubs":|

She likes my shaft, so I'm trying to see if she really wants a stiff shaft. We'll see.

A modern woman's set doesn't look like anything. Like a mans set it should be tailored to her specific needs, not something that's based for an entire gender. It should *probably* look like:

Driver - 13-15*
2 fairway woods around 19* and 22*
3 hybrids - 22* 25* 28*
6-7-8-9-PW-SW
putter

That's 13 clubs. Add a five iron or a 31* hybrid depending on her game. If she's a good iron player go with the 5, if she likes the hybrids go with one of those instead. Don't be afraid to go for a set that is almost all hybrid or woodlike irons. Even LPGA players are using bags made up of a high number of hybrids and fairway woods. Some are carring a driver, 4 fairway woods, another 3 hybrids and onyl something like 7-8-9-pw-sw in conventional irons. And don't necessarily lock yourself into a set made for women. If she's taller and stronger a set for senior men might be a good fit. They're longer and slightly stiffer than regular womens clubs, but generally lighter and softer than regular mens. They're also highly geared towards more lofted fairway woods and hybrids rather than long and middle irons.

Take a look at Adam's golf. You don't have to buy that brand, but I think they have the best set make-up now for women and senior men. They've taken the hybrid-wood and hybrid-irons to new levels to make up sets that are super easy to hit. That should give you some ideas on what sets are starting to look like now rather than the old 1-3-5 and 3-pw sets.

Yes, plus they must say "Lady ..." whatever on the face, have a butterfly pic, and come in mist blue or azure. :D

Thanks GagHalfrunt, I was hoping you'd reply. You actually hit on what she needs. If she needs a 150y shot she's grabbing my hybrid 3i and getting pretty close.

I like the option of only carrying 7-PW for irons as she does well with those. Especially since she's using an old set of irons of mine that I didn't realize were senior men's clubs.

so that's where she's at - inbetween womens and mens senior, leaning mostly to mens seniors. Her 8 iron is about 95 yards.

Get her one a launch monitor to be sure. The good thing about fitting for women is that ego doesn't get in the way like it does with men. If she's between women and senior flex, go for women. Softer is usually better as that helps distance and trajectory, the two things most golfers at that level need. Accuracy might suffer a tad, but golfers at that swing speed don't hit the ball far enough to go really badly offline. And don't get locked into carrying 14 clubs just because the rules say you can. If she can't hit the 5 and 6 effectively or even the 5 6 and 7 effectively get rid of them. Either replace them with superlofted hybrids or let her carry only 11 clubs. It's better to have a hole in the bag rather than a club that produces nothing but bad shots. That's a lesson most women learn easier than most men.

you know if she feels the clubhead "lagging" behind, she might have a tempo problem that she should fix before getting into a "real" set of clubs.
