Buying diamonds on ebay....

Just curious.

I've been shopping for diamond rings, earrings, etc and very similiar items on ebay are going at a fraction of the cost compared to jewelry stores. Same color and clarity as the store too.

Also, does anyone know if you can get clarity enhancement done? One diamond was a good color but bad clarity, and i figured i could get the enhancement done on my own.

Thanks guys.

i dont consider anything about ebay safe. but thats just me. definitely buy with a fraud protected CC if you can cuz ebay is worthless for that stuff (again imo)

yup..make sure you have a protected cc because ebay is crap and so is squaretrade really when it comes down to really protecting buyers and reimbursement (can't spell this morning)

so basically by buying whatever i get with my amex it will protect me if the item isnt as described?

a 1/2 carat diamond couild be worth $100 or it could be worth $1000 as an example. The value of which is determined by cut, color, and clarity among other things. I dont know much about diamonds but I know I could not tell the difference between a $100 1/2 carat and a $1000 1/2 carat.

It seems to me there is way too much room for fraud when buynig diamonds off ebay.

well the guy selling the item has over 10,000 feedback, few negatives, but the positives out weigh the negatives.

I would seriously avoid ebay for diamonds. Unless they provide a certificate by GIA or AGS they can say anything they want about the diamond and you will never know if they are lying until it arrives on your doorstep.

As an example, say I had a crappy diamond that I wanted to sell on ebay. I could call it a D (colorless) ideal cut diamond. The majority of people would not bother to get it appraised to determine if they actually got what they paid for. Say that you do get it appraised, and you find out that the diamond is really a piss-yellow poorly cut diamond. What do you do now, send it back? I could quite easily say that the piss-yellow diamond wasn't the one that I mailed to you, and you would be out of luck.

I would recommend checking out www.pricescope.com and using one of the vendors through that site. Better quality diamonds at prices that are comparable to ebay. These are reputable vendors that sell diamonds that are certified by independent labs to be exactly what they say they are.

the diamond earrings im looking at are inscribed with a serial number

I'd stay away from ebay for stuff like this. There's nothing like actually holding the diamond in your hand and examining it with a loop yourself.

EGL is one of the worst labs. It's better than no cert at all, but only barely.

On the other hand, you really don't need high quality stones for earrings, so I might consider buying them if:

1) the seller is reputable
2) they have at least a 30-day return policy
3) they have a better price than you can find elsewhere online
4) you get them appraised locally right after you buy them

If we are talking about a pair of $100 earrings rather than $5K earrings, you should probably skip the appraisal. Also consider that serial numbers are almost always inscribed on the girdle of the diamond (the outside edge), and this is often covered up by the mounting. So if you buy the diamonds mounted in earrings it is likely that you will not be able to view the serial number.

The earrings i plan to buy will be between 500-700. And in a jewelry store that barely gets you a .75 carat total weight, cause the diamonds are e-h color and very good clarity. I want a diamond that is h-i color and clarity enhanced. And on ebay with that price range i can get 1.6 carat earrings.

Explore all you want. But for God's sake go look at the diamonds. They can vary a great deal in quality. WTF do I know though? Go ahead and buy your ebay diamond. I'll just keep my eyes open for your "The diamond I bought off ebay is just a chunk of glass!" thread.
