Hello

Can you guys tell me where could i get the x-fi elite-pro for cheap in singapore. I checked out creative's website and they are selling it for 679 singaporean dollars which i think is pretty expensive. are there any cheaper places to buy electronic stuff

Are you from Singapore or just visiting?

The place to go in Singapore is Sim Lim Square. Mainly floors 4 to 6. As you go up the elevators, you'll be handed photocopies of price lists. I don't recall seeing that on the last set of price lists I saw.

If you're only visiting, you can recover GST (a sales tax) when you leave. I think it may be possible to do in in Sim Lim itself. I'm living in Singapore now, so it doesn't apply to me.

In general, prices are negotiable and are about 10% more than the USA. Knock off the GST, and you're more like 5%+ more. Singapore is very advanced and modern, but only has 4 million people so order quantities are smaller.

the good news is that you're getting near mail order USA prices, no rebate silliness, and you can go from shop to shop all in one place. The bad news is slightly higher prices and you have to pay with cash or the local debit card to get the best deal.

thanks for the reply Micheal

I was comparing prices and was tryng to figure out if i should get the soundcard from singapore, the US or just here in england.

from what you say, it seems that the prices are higher in singapore than in the US. i thought creative was singaporean and one would get a better deal at least on creative prodcuts in singapore

My XFI XtremeMusic box label says it was made in Malaysia. Other than shipping (and that really isn't that big a deal when you're shipping container loads), I don't see why it would be much cheaper here in Singapore.

The XFI XtremeMusic goes for around $205 Singapore dollars. That's about $125 US at today's exchange rate. Take out the impact of the 5% GST and you're looking at $119 US, pretty much the same as NewEgg. If you consider that the average Singaporean salary is lower than the average US salary (cost of living is cheaper here in many ways, though), it actually is very pricey.

As you say, that's a pretty expensive soundcard. Are you sure you want it vs the cheaper X-Fi cards?

I ahven't finished putting my computer together, so I haven't heard what the lower end one sounds like. Compared to the Audigy in my current computer, the I/O is a little less:

- no Firewire port (not so important as it is integrated in many MBs)
- no Midi game port (you need the front panel for this)

Also, there are no internal plugs to go to the front panel for cases

I have a 6.1 set-up for speakers. If I can plug a microphone in, but there's no jack left for headphones if I hook up my speakers. My speakers actually have a port to plug headphones into that sits in the volume/base control (on a wire that goes to my desk), but you can't plug in a mic through there.

The front panel that Creative provides for everything except the Xtreme Music does have a front panel (takes on 5 1/4" slot) with a bunch of connection options. They also provide a remote control that I guess would be useful if you were running the computer as more of a media center and were not sitting right in front of it.

I looked at onboard sound, Audigy 2 ZS and the new X-FI cards. Since I'm building a new computer, I decided to get the most recent card. I saw no need for the extra front panel or ram, so I went for the basic model. I'm not sure what use the OP intends for his sound card. I'm going to use mine for game play, watching movies and listening to music.

It's worth the diff IMO.

I've used both the extreme music and elite pro and the elite pro is definitely quieter. It also has a phonograph input if you have the need to connect a turntable directly to the pc.

micheal, what is the current audigy in your computer

what do you mean by you need the front panel for the midi game port?

i thought the elite pro was an external box

do you guys think i should go for the faility instead of the elite-pro?

I think the Xtreme Music is the most sane choice for what most people use them with.

What are you using as the output device? Do you have plans for that external box?

rookie1010,

You're right, the elite pro doesn't use a front panel, it uses a "box" to make connections. There's a card that goes into the computer and the box plug into the card. So instead of taking up a 5 1/4" bay, it takes up space on your desk <grin>.

I have a SB Audigy (not a 2, the first one that came out) in my current computer. I'm waiting to see what the story is with the new videocards due soon before I make my final motherboard selection. Once I do that, I'll install the X-FI XtremeMusic in my new computer.

what kind of card goes into the box.

some one told me if i could hook up the box via a usb interface i could use the elite-pro with a laptop or any desktop around
