Okay, so I'm looking to buy some pans, cooking sheets, etc. things like that. So, yes... my current assumption is that the situation is similar to how it is on PC parts - generally, you can get more for less online. Supposing that is true - sites to buy stuff from for a good price? Or should I just look locally?

who is howard?

There's a poster here named Howard, he's a lifer.

And I doubt you'll find stuff online much cheaper than you can in stores - the good stuff always seems to hover around the same price. Your best bet is to go to a restaurant supply store and buy the nice thick stainless steel pans and pots they have there, as you'll probably spend less than you would paying retail for name brands. You also don't need many things, generally an 8" or 10" sauce pan + lid, skillet (I prefer a large and small skillet, whereas my mom always uses one size) and then two or three pots, varying from like 2 QT to a larger 8 QT stock pot. Also, consider having a nice cast iron skillet - makes a good difference on some foods like steaks and chicken.

Guy's been here 5 years and has never heard of me?

Look up a local restaurant supply store. Might not be the cheapest stuff around, but the selection will be good and quality high. The other stuff you can get good deals on online; Amazon has sales frequently.

Good post. Just about a perfect list.

Especially the Cast Iron skillet - Mine is my favorite piece, probably older than Social Security, and (believe it or not), I bought it for a couple bucks at a garage sale from some people cleaning out their mother's house. Unlike a lot of new cookware, good cast iron only gets better with age and use. Don't bother with soap: The oils from cooking will season the pan and make it non~stick over time. I merely take mine directly (still HOT) from the stove to the sink, scrub brush it under water, and set it aside to dry.

I recommend buying cookware to last decades, and paying accordingly. I also have a (fetish!?!?) for superior knives.
