Buying components Online

The summary says it all. Lots of pricing from Newegg etc. I wonder how often one has to return things and is it worth it? The best (it seems) places are in CA where I am so I'd be stuck with taxes and shipping costs. If I buy local I save the shipping costs and can drive to return a non working component but I will pay ~10% or more premium and the selection is not as good (unless I go to multiple stores possibly).

So what are your experiences. How easy it is to return something if you had to or did everything work perfectly?

Thanks

My experiences with both NewEgg and ZipZoomFly have been very good. I built a new rig earlier this year and every component except mouse and keyboard I ordered from either one. NewEgg has the best RMA in the business. ZZF doesn't have the same reputation, but I have had no issues with the parts I ordered from them such as motherboard and monitor.

So to answer your question: No hassle at all.

I've used eWiz and Newegg. I haven't had a problem with either. I had to return something to eWiz and they charged me a 15% restocking fee. I believe it is the same with Newegg. The thing I like with Newegg is your products get to with in 2 days (depending on what time you order). I've been very pleased with the service I've received from both.

I have been buying on line from NewEgg, Zip Zoom Fly, Multiwave, Buy Comp, E-Bay, and a few other places not computer related. In the last 8 years, I have never had to return anything. No0 problems at all. There is always the weighing of shipping costs vs. sales tax. Sometimes I buy locally when I need something "RIGHT NOW."

It is helpful to have a valid email address that you don't use for anything else - just as an on line validation point, because buying on line is definitely a Spam magnet. 🙂

i've ordered from tigerdirect and newegg, with tiger, theres no need to pay taxes, but the time it takes for the package to get to my place (CA) is too long. newegg takes 2 days to ship with just UPS Ground since its based in CA. All the equipment i've bought from these two companies came in excellent condition and are still working from the day I received them.

but I will pay ~10% or more premium and the selection is not as good (unless I go to multiple stores possibly).
My local stores charge full list price. CC and BB are in my area but have no where near the selection that's avaliable on line. Pretty much a no-brainer for me to let my fingers do the walking and buyin'.

I buy all of my computer components online and most of the software too. I have yet to find a decent parts place anywhere near me, so online is really the only way to go for me.

I started with phone orders and paper catalogs ordering computer parts. I have ordered several hundred times online. It is the way to go. Much larger selection and and far more units of each SKU than B&M stores. I rarely ever return anything.

Thanks for all the positive input. When I get closer to buying I'll spend the time to price out items from each and see what the benefit is. Right now it seems that the biggest downside to buying locally is the selection. If they happen to have exactly what I want then I think it would be ok but it seems if I was to do the buying today it would not.

I plan to buy the software (OS) online for sure.

I've had many positive online experiences.

HOWEVER, delivery can be a pain. If you aren't aroudn when they drop it off you have to hope you live in a safe area, or your neighbor is nice enough to leave it with them.
