Buying case filters??

Hey everyone,

I just put together a new system, with my case being the CoolerMaster 590. Wonderful case and I'm really liking it, however, it has a number of vents and holes for mounting fans on the top and sides.
I will not be using all of these, and unlike the front of the case that includes a nice fiber/mesh filter, the fan holes don't have any filter.

Is it possible to buy good filtering material for PCs? And if so, how does it install without a fan behind it?

Unfortunately, 140mm fan filters are kind of hard to find .

I have fans installed on all of the mounting points of my CoolerMaster 590 except the two fans on the side door, and I don't use filters over the fans. On the side panel, I have these filters. Since I don't have fans behind them, they're a little loose, but they do stay on.

i use panty hose for fine screens or screen (like a screen door) for a more open kind.

2 dimensional filter material like the netting that comes with the 590, nylon stocking material, etc. is quick to clog, but easy to clean. you want filter material that has some thickness to it if you don't want to be cleaning it all the time. Anyway, there are mounts for 120 also where it could take 140. Various types are available for 120.

I make my own using door screening and surround the cut ends with duct tape.

Your the first one I ever seen that spelled duct tape properly LOL. Even though some of the duct tape packaging has a duck on it.

you should buy a big piece of mesh and cut it out yourself. shouldn't be that hard. home depot?

Actually the original tape was called duck tape.
It got the name during war because it would stay put when wet.



The cheapest thing I have found is the cut to fit air conditioner filters that are made of the black material. Its easy to work with and will not block air flow.

Not to mention the brand Duck Tape, many people refer to it that way because of the branding.

I forgot to mention in my earlier post that the AC foam filter mentioned above is what I use. You can find 3-piece filter holders at places like Jab-tech.com or SVC.com. They come with a piece of filter already in them, but they often seem to bee pretty porous. I replace the originals with the AC foam the first time they need cleaning and then wash or replace with more foam from there on. For places where the frame isn't convenient, I use self-stick Velcro (the hook part) to hold the foam in place. Others have used the pleated furnace filter material and other jerry-rigs. Try 'em all and go with the one that works for you.

Over on the http://www.xtremesystems.org/Forums/ in the 'Air Cooling' section, Vapor posted a test of several types of filters as well as the standard wire finger guard re. restriction - interesting. Use the advanced search tool there to find the threads started by Vapor in the Air Cooling section to find the filter test thread. He also posted several fan test threads that are well worth anyone's time to read if one hasn't read them already. I don't recall if he mentioned which kept the case cleaner which I'd think is the purpose of using filtration...
