Say I go to NJ or MD to buy a car and I live in VA, do I pay the NJ/MD tax and the VA tax too?

Typically, you either don't pay the tax when you buy the car, or if you do pay it, just show proof of payment in your home state and you get credit for the payment. If you're buying from a dealer and they collect the sales tax, make sure it is clearly specified in the bill of sale.

In my state, the tax is paid when I register the car.

When I was in the military stationed in New Mexico, my wife and I each bought new cars three weeks before we moved to Maryland.

To register our cars in Maryland, I had to make up the difference in sales tax (NM 3% - MD 5%). That excise tax cost me a grand.

You have to pay taxes in every state you cross to get it home in the form of gasoline taxes.

I boughta car in NJ and titled it in MD about 10 years ago. The dealeship that sold the car handled everything for me, and the tax was only paid in MD.

Sometimes dealers in neighboring states will handle the taxes for you.
