Buying car on ebay, im in ny its in chicago

I'm probably going to be buying a car on ebay motors. My question is, how would I get it home by driving? Would I have to get it registered and insured here first, then go down with the plates and registration etc? Its from a dealer in Chicago. Is there anything they can do? Or do I need to do everything up here. I've never purchased a car out of state so I'm kinda clueless. Any info appreciated!

call your state DMV/DOT and check but this is what i understand;

a) the dealer will give u 30 day tag.
b) you need to call your insurance and add the car to ur policy before picking up the car - get the VIN etc. before when u call the insurance ppl
c) the dealer will prolly not charge u taxes - u will have to pay them when u register ur car in ur state and when u go to pay the taxes
d) inspect the car
e) usually the next question is - can i drive the car non-stop to NY - Yes you can - without stopping ...

hth ... enjoy .. best of luck

i know i can get it shipped but it would cost alot more than going and picking it up (only 600 miles from here to there im in rochester ny) plus I want to see it to make sure its as described before accepting it anyways.

good plan.

What I did when I bought a car out of state was get insurance, buy the car, drive it directly to the local DMV in that state and get a 1-day permit, then go to the DMV in my state and get everything transferred.

Depending on the laws of the state in which you buy it, it MIGHT be auto-insured when you buy it (Washington's like that apparently...my insurance company was kind of vague when I sold my car).

wtf?

Whatcho mean, wtf? You never heard of this? They take the car and put it in a big crate with like tons of bubble-wrap and styrafoam peanuts and newpapers and stuff, and they mail it to you. Your mailman will hate you afterwards, but hey, you gots a phat ride out of the deal, yo!

i would not reccomend it, i went to sc, bought car on ebay. car was detailed, engine was running smooth. after measuring with elcometer car was painted and car fax didnt show any problems plus when i requested to drive on hwy , they decline, fine i test drove it in their parking lot engine no power at all and was making horrible noise dont think it would make it on hwy than blake smoke from exaust

When I buy out of state I just drive it home and do all the insurance/registration crap when I get back home. Make sure you get a bill of sale, and if you get pulled over just show the cop it. I've done this several times with no problems.

Well, I know theres no respect for Saabs here, but heres a link ...

Finding a 9000 in that condition with that many miles is REALLLY hard. It would have been my 2nd 9000 (I love the cars)
The only thing I didnt care for on it was the auto....but I'd take it over a stick simply because of the mileage and condition

Time to keep looking, I guess
