Buying cables are a PITA

I know it's probably a speaker system that most of you in here would shun, but it's what I've got. Anyways, I went out to get some optical connection cable so that I could hook up my brother's iMac, and my DVD player, which both have a regular headphone jack that can also accept a round TOSLINK cable. Turns out, I got the wrong kind of TOSLINK: the JIS F05, which is aa square plug.

Why is it so difficult to find the right kind of plugs?

Anyways, the main reason I'm in here is because I wanted to know exactly what to ask the guy at the shop: so, what do I ask him for?

TIA

voila

Toslink minijack on one end, regular shitty square plug on the other. That is what you are looking for right?

Your DVD player doesn't have a regular square-ish toslink output on the back?

All the TOS Link cables I've bought come with an adapter for both ends.

Well, I found the adapter. I just went to the store with my DVD player (it's very small), and told him I need a converter for this, and I got it. Thanks guys.

Now I just need something for my brother's iMac. Do they use the same kind of connection as a round TOSLink, or are they different?
