Ok noob question but do you have to pay taxes if you buy something big in Canada and bring it back to the US?

I'm thinking about driving to Canada to get to an Ikea store up there, since they aren't available in the states. I was hoping to drive up, buy the stuff I need, then haul it back to New York State. Do you have to pay taxes on stuff like that or are you not allowed to do it at all?

It's been a long time since I've had to buy anything in Canada, but from what I remember, you'll be paying GST and PST (taxes) at purchase and you'll get a form at the border to refund your GST.

<48 hours - $50
>48 hours - $500
>7 days - some larger number.

As long as she has her passport with her, it should be fine.

It's fine. The only limitation is on stuff bought duty free... but if you pay all the taxes on it, there's nothing to worry about. Don't even need to declare it entering the US.

Prostitution is illegal, even if the prostitute is black.

LOL @ all the replies, I'm just talking about Ikea furniture here, not hookers, drugs, guns, or anything else like that.

I don't think you can buy slaves in Canada and bring them back. Or if you do, and they escape, they become free. Can't remember which...

If you're talking about custom fees, I think you may have to pay those if the item(s) are about $50 in value.

If you're talking about sales taxes on the item(s), in some cases visitors can get the taxes they paid refunded to them. Look at and fill out Form RC4031: Tax Refund for Visitors to Canada.

Prostitution is not illegal. Solicitation of sex in public is.
