Looking for something that will play Doom3, HL2, and any newer games. Current setup is a P4 3Ghz with 1GB PC3500.

My X800 Pro plays all new games very well. The only people who'll tell you you're making a mistake are people with 6800 GTs and fragile hardware egos.

They do not excel in Doom 3 or opengl in general, but do very well in DX9. It depends on the price, driver/brand preference and games you like. They also OC well due to 4 pipes being disabled.

In short if you see a 6800GT for $360 and a X800 Pro for $400, get the GT. If you can somehow get the X800 for less (maybe used) and like ATI then the X800 is a good choice. If you can spring for the X800 XT then buy that over both :).

You can also get a X800 Pro VIVO and mod it, I see them around for ~$460.

The x800 can be found used for <$350 same with the 6800GT. That's why it's so hard to decide. I can get both for around the same price.

You'd need to softmod the X800Pro in order to get the XT, but you just need to OC the 6800GT to get an Ultra. They both play all games very well, the 6800GT slightly better than the Pro, but not noticeably. I'd just get whichever is cheaper.

The 6800GT pushes more fps in most games (about the same in HL2), but draws more power and makes more heat. The X800 uses a bit more power than the 6600GT, but like 30% less than the 6800GT. Who's drivers do you like? Is the X800 BBA brand? Who makes the 6800GT?

The X800 is BBA which I think is the way to go. The 6800GT would either be PNY or my choice which is the BFG 6800GT OC.

BFG is good, PNY is crap IMO. For the same price and you have no brand preference, the BFG is the better bang for the buck.

I'm happy with my X800 Pro. Plenty of speed. Both are very fast. Go with form factor ( does the two slot 6800GT fit in your case, etc.) and small details like that.

Ya, the BFG is two slots I think and noisier. The BBA fan is running at 66% and can be adjusted by temp (ie. steps up in RPM when the temp goes up) via ATItool.

I would go for whichever was free. But seriously I don't see a significant difference between the two. If you like Nvidia's logo get the 6800 GT if you like the ATI logo go for the X800 Pro.

Just FYI if you decide on a BFG. The fancy dual fan cooler does not appear to cool the card as well as the reference nvidia single fan solution. So, I would suggest, if you have any control over this that is, to get the BFG6800GTOC with the reference nvidia cooling design. It is also much quieter. I have both versions of the BFG6800GT so I have a direct comparison right in front of me.

All prices being equal (E.G. 6800GT 400.00 or X800pro 400.00) go for the GT. My opinion.

As an X800Pro owner, I'd buy the 6800GT given equal prices. I pesonalyl went with the x800pro because I got it for dirt cheap frankly (emp. discount).

Make sure you look into the problems with the video decoding on the 6800gt/ultra

i would of had either depending on the price....in agp form, both are great cards, both are in high supply....but i just cant help thinking that in the long run (after spending £300 on a card...i want it to last) the x800pro will run out of grunt first

I have just installed Farcry and patch 1.3 and HDR is so sweet!!! It looks incredible. There's a performance drop but it is in the 30fps avg with 24fps lowest. I thought it wouldn't be smooth but it is and IQ is superb. So now I'd go with 6800GT without doubt (X800 can't do OpenEXR HDR in farcry), performance with both is superb but 6800GT has more features.
