I've used a third party charger, but not extensively. I've bought other parts and the Apple OEM items have a better build quality and will last longer, but the generics will get you by.

Never buy a third party battery though.

I have actually had pretty good luck with aftermarket batteries in the old plastic MacBooks. I have had one in my older black MacBook for 3 years and it has been fine. The Apple one blew up like a balloon at 4 years old. Machine is otherwise still kicking even though it is 7 years old.

My mom's BlackBook is still chugging along too. It's OG battery finally kicked in the last year or so, and we dropped an SSD into it maybe 3 years ago.

I've had mixed success with them. I've went through a fair amount of them because the way it's positioned tends to put stress on the cord. The aftermarket ones vary in quality and all are certainly a downgrade from the real deal. I haven't had one that didn't work, the cords just failed much faster than the real genuine produce. If you can afford it get an OEM one.

My recommendations would be to go with a an OEM one, you don't know what you might end up with.

However, if you don't afford it, choose one that is recommended by others, don't buy an unknown one.

Good luck!
