Buying an SSD

So, clearly there are alot of options out there, and I just am not able to keep up on it all. I'm putting a rig together for my cousin and am looking for something between 120-250gigs for his OS drive. I want it to be ras problem free as possible. Doesn't have to have the best read/write times, but obviously reasonably competitive. Anyone have a good direction for me to head?

Samsung is solid all the way... 830 or 840Pro, you can't go wrong. I also like the Plextor M5P (I would have gotten that except the 840Pro went on sale.)

I would probably stay away from OCZ of any kind, not that the newer versions aren't good (the '4' series,) but there is some question on how long OCZ will remain solvent.

Other good drives are Intel and the Crucial M4.

My local Staples had a 20% off sale until 3/2 with this coupon. May not be the best SSDs, but they had these two for a pretty good price after the discount:

Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB for $71.99
Kingston SSDNow V200 256GB For $127.99

Might be worth checking out if you have a Staples nearby (in store only).

I got the V300 120GB, used a 30% off coupon from Office Depot AT Staples, total, $68.04 out the door.

That's a great deal. Thanks.

It is easier to find a 120GB deal than 256GB deal. In fact the Staples deal Charles has posted is the best SSD deal I have ever seen.

What he was saying is that its Staple's policy to accept competitor's coupons. That Office Depot coupon would make the 256GB I found in my local Staples even cheaper - $111.99!

Thanks for the input. And sorry for me taking so long to respond. I forgot to subscribe to the thread so I thought Iadn't had any replies. From the info I've been able to gather, those were the drives I were leaning towards.

Quick question, is there a large difference between the samsung pro's and regular samsung 840s?

Tiger direct has the regular 840 250 gig for $139 right now

For everyday use, the standard 840 would be fine. The difference is the type of NAND it uses... it affects the longevity of the unit. The standard 840 should last at least 5 years... 😉 I wouldn't give it a second thought.

That's a very good deal...
