Hello,

I've been searching for a new monitor to go with the computer I ordered (NVidia GPU). I have looked at monitors for 3 nights straight and I feel like I am about as far along on the purchase as when I started. This is going to be a gaming PC; Battlefield 3, Counter-Strike source, may play Diablo III and other similar modern games plus some older games occasionally. E-mail and internet surfing are my second use of the monitor. I may watch a movie occasionally but my main video watching is just YouTube. So to get to the point here. I'm looking for a 23"/23.6" monitor. That being said while I admit an IPS is tempting for the rich colors I am sold on a 120Hz TN for gaming. After much research I've identified these, one of which I will purchase by the weekend. I've noted my impression/opinion next to each. I am hoping you can provide additional input/steering.

-Samsung S23A750D/950D - I feel this will have the best look, the coating is superior on the Samsung products and I feel the quality/type of coating really make a difference in percieved IQ. I would have bought this already if I wasn't discouraged by the lack of NVidia 3D vision support. While 3D isn't my primary purchase reason, it would be nice if 3D still worked well, even if it was just for novelty value. Anyone know how well the Samsung 3D actually works? Clearly it doesn't have the level of integration with games as Nvidia 3D vision, correct? Again, top 2 right now just hesitant due to lack of Nvidia suppport. Looks nice.

-ViewSonic V3D245 - Also in top 2. Has the Nvidia 3Dsupport. The coating on this appear to be inferior to the Samsung model. Believe this TN panel may be a little inferior to S23A750D/950D but this is just from watching reviews on YouTube. Based on how good my friend's 2006 era Viewsonic looks this is a strong contender.

-AlienwareOptX AW2310 - Know nothing about it. Suspect it is just a Dell. But I didn't to not exclude it from disccussion. It has rarely came up in discussions.

-ASUS VG236H - Not one I am strongly considering but I am keeping an open mind. Has the 3D vision support, which is nice. Feel there is a lot of hype over ASUS products.

-Acer GD235Hz - Same as ASUS. Keeping an open mind though. Ugly. With better choices out there i've decided this is not longer an option for me.

-Planar SA2311W (added) - Didn't know anything about this. Someone mentioned it and i've started looking into. Seems to be a fantasic monitor. Going to try to read some more reviews and see how it stacks up against the Samsung and the Viewsonic.

It would be great if someone has seen some of these side-by-side or has had a chance to use more than one of them for comparision.

Thank you for your time, it is greatly appreciated.

Don't go with the Acer. I have it... wish I didn't. Terrible colors, bad backlight bleed, odd buzzing sound coming from the monitor on certain webpages due to contrast, and I'm not the only one with these issues.

I'd go with the ViewSonic V3D245 from what I've seen. The Samsung monitors not supporting 3D vision is a dealbreaker for me because I already have the glasses and have used it on the Acer. The 3D is nice for certain games, and apparently DDD (or whatever Samsung is using) doesn't work as well as Nvidia's offering. IMO 120Hz is okay for 2D but I haven't personally noticed a big difference like others. I feel the real perk is 3D Vision so the Viewsonic is my choice. However I do like Asus products too so I wouldn't discount that.

Currently running with the Alienware AW2310. its probably not the cheapest 120hz monitor out there, but its definitely a boss!

EDIT: just wanted to clarify that I have yet to actually use the monitor for 3D gaming. I mainly bought it for its 120hz capability. So far, its more then met my expectations in that area.

I'll give a plus to Samsung - I have a 2233rz and it's been my staple monitor for 3-4 years. Fantastic for gaming (but I've never used it for 3D).

Unless they've gone incredibly far off the rails, I would assume their newer 120hz models will be great as well.

Thanks guys. Wish these all came with the height adjustment like the Alienware. My LCD at work is adjustable and I brought it up to a proper height from an ergo standpoint. Some of the fixed stands i'm afraid will be too low.

Karstein,

To me it seems a lot of these panels as far as quality goes are closer than you think, it is just the coating they use that can impact how clear the pictures are. A good example some of the matte finish anti-glare makes the picture look dull in some cases. If Samsung has one thing right it is the coating. Thank you for your input on your Samsung experience.

Thats another thing I forgot to mention about it. I love the height adjustment feature.

It was mentioned to me that I had overlooked the Planar SA2311W. I've looked into it some and it appears to be a very solid choice. Does not look like its an LED but a CCFL instead. Not sure if this is a major issue or not as I know some prefer it not be LED. Looking into this. Maybe someone has one of these and can discuss it.

I hope you know LED LCD monitors have 5ms to 8ms latency .. if you turn on vsync to eliminate tearing your going to get input lag, or known as mouse lag. You want your aiming to be like a CRT.

Anyhow Im @ 1ms  so things are flawless for me. No input lag just like my FW900 but better picture.... :)

Your going to get ghosting and motion blur because of the the monitors 8ms latency. I saw a 23 inch LED for 179.99 today at best buy. thx gl,

Make sure to ignore tweakboy on this forum, he mostly just posts incoherent thoughts that hold no truth.

once again you have no freaking clue what you are saying. MOST TN panels are 5ms whether they are LED or not. LED is just the type of backlight. the ASUS monitor I have now is 2ms but is also LED backlit.

and that 5ms you are referring to is screen response and has NOTHING to do with input lag. the lower the screen response, the smoother the image on the screen will appear. you can have a screen with really horrible response time but very low input lag because again those are two different things.

Go for the 27" samsung s27950d. Average black levels but awesome color reproduction and overall image quality. The 23" model isn't as good though.
