People will buy AMD wether Conroe is a little faster/better or alot faster/better. Afterall, people were buying AMDs before Intel lost the crown and I dont see why they'll stop. Sure, many will jump back over to Intel conroe but thats not going to stop AMD chip sales.

With there 6-7% better performance over S 754. :p

I have a Socket A Sempron 2400+ and just happen to be looking at buying a machine right now, hence considering an AM2 system. It'll have support beyond the 939 platform. If buying now, why not?

I happen to love best buy, and staples. I practically have a lifetime supply of $8 DVD-R cause of them...

Where is the performance difference??????? Anybody that upgrades from a 939 to a AM2 must be nuts..( at least until there is some "real performance gain") I was hoping to upgrade from my 754... no fnnn way. Two things did not happen

I'm using a P4 1.8ghz. By the last Benchmark I was able to find, the Semphron 3000 or whatever it was called, outperforms my chip by 50%-100% (RDRAM keeps it from being 100% across the board).

This is going to be god like in speed compared to my comp.

1. AM2 no performance gain 2. 939s prices have not dropped...Bring it on Intel :)

I don't think people should upgrade from s939 to AM2. But some people, who want to make their own system before the summer, don't have Conroe as an option.

Besides, I like the fact that AMD has the mem controller on the chip, and would gladly support that idea.

Dual channel ram and a working AGP lock? For over clockers yeah. For regular gamers it was just another variable 5% increase.

For the past 4-5 years the server has been taking all the glory while us desk top owners just stood still in boredom. " Oooohh wow. 200 MHz more for an extra 300 dollars--feed me semore. "

AM2 will likely be finished before it even arrives:

--Requiring expensive switch of Mobo, Memory, and HSFs (remember the new retention mech.?)
--Conroe will probably dominate the benchmarks before 65nm arrives for AMD; even then, there is no guarantee that it will pull even.
--No word on compatibility with K8L chips; No word on compatibility with Quad core.
--Socket F has become the truly upgradable platform; and seems to be a generation ahead in interface technology. And that's the direction AMD is likely to head in the future; so 940 pin AM2 likely is the last of a breed.
--AM3 rumoured to be arriving sometime in 2H of 07, with new RAM standard.

Why would anyone consider buying this, who already has a competent system, is just beyond me.

I've seen people buying AM2 now saying they can upgrade to K8L down the line with a CPU change, but it's true that we aren't sure if the current mobos will even support K8L?!

As for AM2 for me - No thanks. Same thing + DDR2 memory, and my heatsinks/watercooling/phase won't mount on it. What a shame.

I'll use my excellent 939 until we see if AM2 brings out something to make it worthwhile to spend so much all over again.

I'm more concerned about having capability to run DirectX 10.

When the day comes that I plunk down the $$$ for a new video card to run DX10, then I'll reevaluate if it's worth it to also buy a new motehrboard, cpu & ram for an AM2 build.

Huh? Skt. 754 had working AGP & PCI locks, if you bought the right motherboard.

AMD needs to do further price reductions.. i am not ready to buy a 4200+ for $180ish when I can get an E6300 for about that price and the 4200+ wouldn't overclock over 25% with the relative ease people are reporting overclocks with their E6300..

not to mention the expensive 590SLI mobos you'd have to buy to get the overclocks with an AM2.. so a big NO to AM2 for now..
