I know this gets REALLY old, but I need advice badly.
I've been on this GF4Ti4400 forever now, and all I want to do is play Far Cry or D3 or HL2 at max settings.
These are my options:
I could go for a retail Winnie 3200+, a DFI Ultra-D, and a 6600GT for about $500.
Or I could buy a 6800GT right now for my agp system for $317, a gigabyte on fedex 2 day (I'm leaving soon so I would want it for my trip). And that would be good, but it leaves me with a real crappy upgrade path. I would have to upgrade to a NF3 motherboard with a 939 CPU so I could keep the GT, then when I get a new 7800 or G80 or whatever I would have to grab the NF4 mobo and keep the 939. I'd end up paying more, in the end, I think.
See, what I think is that I could grab the 6600GT and always upgrade it later via SLi, (I'll mod the Ultra-D) or replace it. It will cost more now to replace all my parts, but I would be getting a much faster CPU (which I intend to OC) and GPU, though the GPU wouldn't be as fast as I wanted. I could get a better GPU, as money isn't an issue, but I won't waste my cash on a card that's going to be replaced very soon (PCIe 6800GT), or a card that obviously isn't a price/performance card (7800GTX). Should I just wait and see if they release a $400 7800 card that outperforms a 6800GT and has all the new features?
Argh, I've been waiting so long! It always seems like something great is waiting if I just hold onto my money for another month. Here comes a a couple years later and I have enough cash saved up to by any upgrade I want AND get a new laptop, but I just can't part with so much money unless I know it was very wisely spent.
Thanks in advance. =(
EDIT: I forgot to mention that I will only buy an nv card. Not biased or anything, but I love playing UT2k4 on linux.
