buying a videocard

Hey, I wanted to buy a video card...I don't know much, but i wanted a video card that is able to last me 2 years and it is good for games...old and new like counterstrike, halflife 2, soon coming out WoW and everquestII.
Whats the cheapest one?

I bought my 9700 Pro for $202 from NewEgg, 9800 Pros were $70 more then, but now they are only $22 more, so go with the 9800 Pro.

Break out an extra $20 and get the 9800 Pro, it'll be worth it. The 9800 Pro is faster with DX9 effects and AA+AF. The alternative is a ~$170 FX 5900 and an extra 256MB DIMM (I think most new games do well with 512MB system memory), but I think the 9800P is a much more future-proof card (it'll offer good framerates longer than the 5900).

You can decide for yourself, though. Take a look at how the 9800 Pro and 5900 perform here. I'd pay particular attention to the performance when both AA and AF are enabled, as that's what these high-end cards are best at. You'll notice the 9800P is faster than the 5900 with few exceptions, and much faster with AA+AF.

I agree that you should spend the extra and get a 9800 pro, since you're trying to keep this card for 2 years. Also, 512mb of ram is the minimum I would be running.

i agree with pete here... stretch out abit an grab a 9800pro and some more ram, wait and save up abit more cash if u need to. but if your after something right now then get a 5900 and an extra stick of 256..........bearing in mind that its DX9 performance is not really a match for ATI

9800 Pro is the best bet (with the current price for the Sapphire, it's got a great bang/buck factor), and maybe increase your system's RAM within the next 6 months or so. A P4 2GHz, even a P4A (I don't know what the 4500s use), will be fine for a little while yet. ith the 9800 Pro, your RAM will be the biggest thing holding you back, but I wouldn't recommend anything right now if $200 is your total price point.
Since I'm ona RAM tangent, do the Dell 4500 PCs have at least the i845PE? If so, you could increase the RAM (get a 512MB PC2700 or PC3200 stick) for around $70 and keep the system going well to around the end of the year, assuming no more delays on games occur 🙂.

I'm in no rush to buy this video card...when do you think the prices of the 9800 pro will go down, and I'm going to get another 256 ram within the week.

It won't go down by a major amount for a few more weeks (when ATi announces a true release date for the new cards).
If you can wait, get a 512MB instead of another 256. Video cards always go down in price...RAM has been doing well the last year, but still seems to depend on the phase of the moon.

I think ill get 512 ram and then wait for the 9800 pro to go down in 1 or 2 months.

Thanks for the advice
