So it's been a while i've had time, but i had a question and nowhere else to go, so back to my longtime friends at AT!!

So i'm in the process of buying a used Honda Accord with a salvage title. I checked out the car and it's good, and i'm giong to have a mechanic look at it. The question i have is about the purchase/Registration.

I did a carfax on the car, and it shows it has a lien on it, but the guy selling said he bought it from an auction salvage title. And he does have the pink slip, but the name on the pink slip (it's a salvage non-running slip, so he had no plates) is to GEICO.

he said that's the pink slip you get when buying from an auction, and that he can sign it over to me and no problem.

is that legit? i'm on hold with the DMV...but it's a loooong wait :)

btw, here's the info from Carfax:
06/22/2005 CA 6
Motor Vehicle Dep. ODOMETER READING FROM DMV 07/15/2005 DANVILLE, CA
Motor Vehicle Dept. REGISTRATION EVENT/RENEWAL 07/19/2005 DANVILLE, CA
Motor Vehicle Dept. TITLE (Lien Reported) 03/06/2007 CA Motor Vehicle Dept. TITLE
03/06/2007 DANVILLE, CA Motor Vehicle Dept. REGISTRATION EVENT/RENEWAL 06/24/2008 CA Motor Vehicle Dept. REGISTRATION EVENT/RENEWAL 04/06/2009 CA Motor Vehicle Dept. REGISTRATION EVENT/RENEWAL 05/27/2009 SAN RAMON, CA Motor Vehicle Dept. REGISTRATION EVENT/RENEWAL 09/09/2009 CA 55,416Motor Vehicle Dept. TITLE SALVAGE (Leased Vehicle)
09/25/2009 CA 55,425 State Agency PASSED EMISSION INSPECTION

SO....if i'm reading it right, given that the lien was reported 3/2007, and then the title was salvaged (leased) on 9/2009, that would lead me to believe that the guy is telling the truth.

Thanks!

You know what a salvaged title is right? It's mostly when an insurance company totals a car. Avoid.

my last car was salvage title and it worked like a champ for 11 years, and that one had front damage, and the only reason it died was because i didn't take care of it. I found salvage to be a great way to get a good deal :)

but the question is on the lien!!! :) helppppp!! :) please, of course, thank you!

i agree with you guys, it is a risk, which is why i'm trying to be as cautious as i can (taking it to a 3rd party mechanic to get it inspected before buying)

my main concern, is if i buy it and then a tow truck comes trying to take it cuz someone else owes $$$ on it

Just give the OP the info he needs. He can do what he wants as long as he knows what he's getting into.

OP, I have no say in this as I have no idea. Sorry.

as i said they would rather take the risk and save the buck.

and for his post i see i am right.

I bought a salvage title 2000 grand voyager for $100 bucks, dropped a 250 dollar motor and trans in there, and down the road I went.

Of course it was a flood victim and I cleaned the inside down to bare metal, but I am not the typical billionare AT'er

I've bought a couple cars from auctions with salvage titles. I've always been told not to buy one with a lein on it. As far as I know you will inherit the lein with the car. I think this guy is trying to pass it off on you because he doesn't want to pay it. I could be wrong though.

Meh, my car is a salvage, but my dad did all the repairs.... I trust him. Lol, it's been good for like 2 years now not a problem.

While I would avoid a salvage car too, a car could be salvaged due to theft. Replace some of the parts and its back to running.

Check to make sure you can get insurance on it. But I wouldn't buy a car with a lien on it.
