buying a used motorcycle question

Rallispec

Lifer
I really want to learn how to ride a motorcycle.. I've never even been on one before, but i can definetly see myself doing it. So today i went to local honda motorsports dealer and looked at bikes.. They had a used Yamaha 600cc bike (92' model... aboug 9300 miles on it, in great shape) for 3,800 dollars... Or i could get a new Honda F4 600cc for 8100 dollars.. Those were the 2 that the dealer recommended to me.

so-- for somebody who has never riden before, what is a good bike to learn on.. and what do you think of the 2 models that the dealer recommended to me?

thanks~!

edit to fix mileage

93k miles??? That has to be the highest miles I've ever heard of on a crotch rocket. I bought a 1995 Yamaha FZR (600cc) 2 years ago with 6000 miles on it for $3000. I think I would look around a little longer.

Also, definitely avoid the new bike if you're a first time rider. Most likely, as much as you don't want to believe it, you're going to drop it in the first year.

93k miles or 9300 miles....sounds like a better deal, buy a cheap first bike. then upgrade when you decide exactly what you want out of a bike.

i'm pretty sure this yamaha was an FZR also.. it was a nice looking bike, real comfortable-- and yeah- it was 9,300 not 93,000.. sorry about that.

Start small (like 600cc or under) and try to find something with minimal bodywork as you will probably drop the bike a few times while learning to ride.....this generally happens in slow-speed maneuving around parking lots and such. Yamaha Secas, Suzuki Bandits, etc are all good choices (they fall into the sport-standard class....kinda sporty, yet reasonably comfy and usually just a nose fairing).

Good luck!
