Buying a used car

I'm a noob to cars and I was looking at 96-00 Civic sedans. I'm looking for a reliable, 4 door automatic vehicle that will last me as long as possible with minimal maintenance.

How much mileage would be acceptable? Are there any other cars I should look for?

IMHO Civics are great but unless you can find someone desperate to sell at a price lower than normal I don't think you're going to get a good deal. Resale on used Toyotas and Hondas can be ridiculous unless you find a motivated seller. Often you're better off buying a newer/lower mileage car from a different maker and just put the money you saved towards repairs. Also, the newest vehicle you're considering is 9 years old. Even if it has a reputation for reliability 9 years of neglect can royally mess it up. You'll be better of getting a car that's been well maintained with a decent reputation than a car with a great reputation that's been abused.

Add at least $800 to your purchase price for repairs. People often sell cars that old because the little things make it not worth owning anymore. Plus if you add that cost to your planning beforehand you can get all the proper shit done and not feel ripped off when you have to start replacing tires, getting an alignment, replacing spark plugs, etc.
