Im thinking of getting a new car (as new as a used car can be). So far I've narrowed it down to a VW polo, but im not sure whether I should spend the extra for the 1.9TDI over the 1.6 petrol.

I also saw a 2008 Audi A3 2.0TDI and its the same price as the 1.9. But im worried about the running costs on the audi and various other things of that nature.

Also, the 1.6 and the 1.9TDI have the same amount of power, is there any reason why I would pick the diesel over the petrol in a small car? Would the extra torque make any difference.

Here are the cars Im looking at. You can hover the mouse over the US flag to change the currency.

How much does a litre of diesel cost vs a litre of petrol where you are? The diesel polo will get better mpg than the petrol polo with the audi somewhere in the middle.

The diesel polo is expensive because it has done fewer miles than the other two. The audi is bigger and faster than the two polos though.

$1.44 per litre of diesel
$1.33 per litre of petrol

Hmmm. I thought the Audi would have the worst fuel consumption.

The Audi would be a significantly more comfortable and quieter vehicle, and drive nicer as well. However you are right in that repair costs would be greater, although the running costs won't be significantly higher in terms of litres per 100km. It does have quite a bit more power as well so it can probably turn a lower gear, the 2.0tdi is also a rather good engine. Overall I've enjoyed driving the A3, but never driven a Polo to compare.

If you go for the Polo get the 1.9 tdi. It had fewer KM's, more power, and better economy.

So Its between the Diesel Polo and the Audi. I'm leaning towards the Audi as its more of a premium brand and they are the same price. Also the extra power cant hurt. I was just worried about repair costs as its a used vehicle.

The Audi is a bit older and it has done a lot more kilometres, that's why it's cheap. The Audi will probably need its cam belt replacing in the next couple of years.
