<< BTW, Saturn was a joint venture between Toyota and GM. Under the hood most of the parts are of Toyota origin. So reliabilty is pretty safe with them. >>
Uhhmmm...no. Saturn was a home brewed GM thing. Initially they copied a lot of Toyota's management style and applied it in their Spring Hill manufacturing plant. That was back in the early nineties. In the mid-late 90's, the UAW changed the labor contract at Spring Hill to a more traditoinal labor contract. Morals at Spring Hill is at its low right now. Saturn internals are NOT from Toyota parts. Nothing of it is. Everything from the 1.9L engine, to the space frame design, and to the polymer panels are not from Toyota. The original 3 spoke steering wheel of hte 1991-1992 came from a Pontiac. You might be mistaken the Toyota thing for the Geo/Chevy Prizm or Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe.
My wife drives a 2000 Saturn L. Initially we were looking at the S model. But the 2000 redo of the S series can be said in one word. CHEAP! The early S series got my respect. Up until the 1999 model year. The S series have a long history of oil burning. Some have this problem, some down. The Saturn L we have is buggy as hell. Granted it is a first year model, but buying a new car and taking it to the dealer for service every 2 months for a whole day is a big pain in the ass.. I drive an Accord, the Saturn L's competitor. I can say the Accord is a much better built car than the Saturn L. I wouldn't recommend the Saturn SL, because you can get either a better built Japanese or Ford Focus, or a better value with the Hyundai Elantra GT.
