buying a router

m looking to buy a new router and i was wondering what brands everyone suggests

i want to get one with a fire wall but will i still be able to connect my x box to it and play online? (i've had past problems with that)

also i don't really know if i'll want a wireless one (i have a laptop through school but will be turning it back in after i graduate next june)

and i've also heard of features that hide your SSID or somthing, can anyone elaborate on that?

anyway just let me know what features to look for also

thanks

I would look into SMC or Linksys. As for the SSID part, you can set it so the AP does not broadcast itself and on the clients you have to specify the SSID.

Most major brands of routers have NAT which is basically a router. Most will have a decent configuration option for opening / closing ports etc. But you won't have to configure anything for your xbox if it's inside your network and you want to connect to live.

Best thing to do is head over to the Hot Deals forum and search for Router. If you see one from DLink, it's NOT a hot deal no matter what price it's at. But other than that for standard home use pretty much any router will do. LinkSys, NetGear, and SMC are the ones I personally use and would recommend. But that's just me...

And you should be able to hook your XBox up to any router without any issues. Mine is hooked up through my NetGear Wireless Router back to my SMC Router and then out the cable modem and it works just fine.

i'll be buying from micro center since i have gift cards there

as for the no router with out a fire wall: the one i have right now is a linksys "etherfast Cable.DSL router with 4-port switch" there is no mention of firewall on it or in the documentation or the box, there is also no fire wall configuration in the setup either

(i bought this one specificly because it didn't have a fire wall and the past problems i've had)

and thank you for the responses and the links
