Buying a refurbished stereo....

I have been looking at getting a new stereo receiver over the past month or so and I have thought about buying a refurb. In particular I have been looking at what Ecost and Ubid have. Has anyone bought a refurb receiver from Ecost or Ubid? If so, how long have you had it and have you had any problems? I would think that with a receiver that if it works that it will most likely work for a long time.

I would not trust uBid unless it is a factory refurb with a manufacturer warranty. eCost usually offers this on their items.

Onkyo has their own refurb sales outlet on their website somewhere.

I'd personally rather buy a last year's closeout than a refurb, but many people are happy with them.

Check prices on new gear at www.OneCall.com and www.jandr.com before buying refurbs. For J&R it might be worth waiting for Friday since they have good 1-day sales.

So, I am specifically looking at a Denon receiver and it says that it has been factory reconditioned by Denon on Ecost. So, it sounds like this would be ok. I am still hoping to get a few more replies before I click buy.

Just check it out thouroughly after you get it, generally, electronics are good for years if they work initially.

If it's screwed up, RMA it quickly.

personally, I do not buy refurb electronics, but many people have good luck with it.
co-worker just bought a refurb receiver and one channel is weaker than the other.

I bought an Onkyo 601 receiver from eCost.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. It had a slip saying it was a cosmetic refurb. I guess they changed the casing or knobs or something because everything looked brand new when I got it.

Edit: For peace of mind, I also bought the extended warranty from them too.

I bought a refurb through onecall. It was completely useless after about 4 months. Contacted H/K directly after 30days of the local guy not being able to determine the problem and H/K replaced mine with a just-released model brand new. I got a steal of a deal. AVR525 for $500 refurb, got replaced by the $1200 AVR630 for free 🙂.

Well I ended up buying a Denon AVR-2105 for just under $400 at Ecost. Hopefully, it work fine out of the box. Is there anything to check other than the speaker outputs and the I/O to test it when I get it?
