Buying a PS3. Care to recommend me a few games?

As the title states I'm buying a PS3 and I would like some recommendations for games to buy. Specifically, older games that I can get for cheap. I'm currently planning on getting Resistance, MGS4 and TES4: Oblivion.

Genres I like: FPS, RPG, RTS (Though I generally don't like playing RTSes on consoles) and GTA Clone/Sandbox.

edit: If you can think of a newer game that you'd think I'd like include it anyway and I'll probably get it once more $$ comes in.

Best game I played on PS3 was Demon's Soul.

Uncharted 2, God Of War 3 were very good too.

I regret buying Demon's Souls simply because it has so thoroughly sucked me in. Funnest game I've played in years.

Demon's Souls
Uncharted
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
GOW 1/2
Ratchet and Clank
MK vs DC
LBP
Super Stardust HD

Games I (really) wish I hadn't bought:
Medal of Honor (hate FPS on console)
3D Dot Game Heroes (retro for retro's sake is just boring)
Super Street Fighter IV (MK vs DC is the only fighting game I'll need for a long, long time)
Soul Caliber IV (see above)

I generally watch Amazon and only buy games when they're $15 or less. Infamous just was on sale at Best Buy for $10 but it's unavailable so I'm waiting for Amazon to match the price and I'll pick it up.

Thanks guys, it's much appreciated. Unfortunately, I spent all of my money on this PS3 and a controller for it, so I'll have to wait until I get some more. However, my local library has a few PS3 games and they're starting to stock Blu-ray movies. :awe:

I would recommend not buying a console unless you already know what games you want to play on it.

But seriously, are you looking for exclusives or anything?

Well, the way I see it is that the only games I'm really missing out on that I want to play are Halo, Gears of War and Mass Effect. The rest of the 360 exclusives don't interest me very much. Also, The failure rate for 360s is appalling (Save for the 360 S) and I really wanted a Blu-ray player so the PS3 fits me very well.

But anyway, to answer your question: Yes, I'm interested in PS3 exclusives.

So, you are buying an older PS3 model? That is the only way this comment would mean anything. If you are going to buy a new PS3, you would compare it to buying a new 360. And the new 360s do not experience the "appalling" failure rate.

Anyway, check out:
Valkyria Chronicles
InFamous (you can DL the demo and check it out; it is an action game)
Killzone 2 & 3; 3 is getting great praise on the multiplayer (when PSN was still up)
God of War 3
Uncharted 1 & 2 - really great action/adventure games, great story and presentation

PixelJunk Monsters is a great tower defense game. It's download only. I've wasted a ridiculous amount of time on that game both single player and multiplayer (2p local co-op. . . so much fun!)

Yes, I'm buying an 80GB CECHL (Third Generation) PS3. And I mentioned that the new 360s don't have a lot of failures.

I went out and picked up a 160GB slim just to play Mortal Kombat a few days after it came out. While we were at the store, my buddy convinced me to get God of War 3. So glad I picked it up. It was amazing. I've never played either of the first two, and I was blown away by GoW 3. Coupled with a big HD plasma, and decent surround sound system -- it makes for an awesome experience. I finished it over the course of three days. It's one of the cheaper titles too, so definitely get on that.

I hadn't played either God of War titles, so I read the wiki page for it before I played the 3rd. It was one of the funner games I have played in a while.

As a note, you can get the first two God of War games in a nice little PS3-compatible (all PS3s) package:

It might be a little late to ask this but I'll just ask anyway, Would the upscaling of the games be really noticeable on a 55" 1080p TV at a distance of 8 to 10 feet?

Ignoring your preferred genres, the games I've had the most fun with are little big planet and burnout: paradise; I'd say get heavy rain too though it's not exactly fun.

I'm just not a fan of the 'typical' PS3 game that much, though enslaved was pretty nice for that. I just couldn't get into MSG 4 yet.

Already got them. I used to work at an independent record/movie/game store that used to buy and sell used movies, games, CDs, etc, etc. We would only buy stuff that was in very good condition, so anytime customers would have items that had like, water damaged box art inserts, missing instruction manuals, or in the wrong case, we'd give them 5 cents for it, even if the game inside was in mint condition. Since 40% of the people selling their system and games needed quick money for rent or a fix, they didn't care.

We'd then take those games we buy for 5 cents apiece and put them in grab bags to sell in a bag of 5 for $7, or employees could buy them for 5 cents. I picked up the God of War 1 & 2 pack plus Little Big Planet for a total of 10 cents. I didn't have a PS3 at the time, but I knew I'd have one eventually.

I've heard for a few people that playing the first two after playing the third might be a bit underwhelming, since the 3rd one is so epic.

Oh yeah, I had totally forgotten about the whole racing genre. It has been a few years since I've played any racing games but I sure as hell enjoyed them when I did. (Burnout 2 and NFS: Hot Pursuit 2 being my two favorites)

I have a 50" plasma at about 11 feet and I notice some jaggies (aliasing) in some games, but otherwise games look fantastic on my TV.

I would suggest you wait for the psn to get restored so you can use it online unless for whatever reason you don't plan on hooking it up.

I have a few suggestions. I would recommend the God of War packs. They are pretty fun. TES is better on computer, but it's still fun on the PS#

Borderlands doesn't need to be GoTY, the original is loads of fun
Prince of Persia (Trilogy) 3 games, remastered for less than the cost of 1
Dragon age just outstanding
Dragon age 2 just outstanding 2

also as a side note, you won't really be missing Mass Effect on the PS3. You'll only miss Mass Effect 1. They released Mass Effect 2 (with the Mass Effect 3 engine) for the PS3:
Mass Effect 2 (PS3)

These are recommendations based on fun and not on $$, sorry you'll have to shop around.
