Buying a PS2 For My 12 Year Old Son for Xmas

Grabbing one from NewEgg when I order some pc upgrade goodies next week. For the 12 year old mainly but also 9 year old daughter and 6 year old son will be involved (with gnashing of teeth by the oldest child I am sure  ).

*It comes with 1 controller, should I buy another wired controller to match or just get a couple wireless?
*They only show a Sony 8meg card or a pair of 8meg memory cards. Are the 32 or 64 meg no name cards ok (the local Target has them)

*Game suggestions?.....the oldest pretty much plays the FPS that I play on the PC but he really likes all kinds of games, RPG etc. (games like KOTOR)......and something fun for the younger pups as well.

Any other pointers would be good......never had a console before (unless you count Pong or Atari....yes, I am an old fart)

Thanks!

Kingdom Hearts is a great recommendation for kids, great game in general.
I'd also suggest the Ratchet & Clank series, great action/platform games

As for as controllers, no real need for the wireless unless you need it for how the setup is for where they will play. I'd personally stick with the Sony brand PS2 memory cards, the off brands can come back to bit ya in the ass.

The system has quite possibly the best game selection out of any console ever so you'll be able to find a ton of quality titles at really cheap prices too.

Games I can think of that were really fun and would be good for him.
Okami
FFX and XII
Ratchet and Clank series
KH 1 and 2
Guitar Hero 1-3 are definitely good choices. Get the bigger card thats no name. 20 bucks for 8mb is ridiculous.
and for the little kids, God of War and GTA san andreas.

Don't get the No Name Bigger Card. Many games such as Kingdom Hearts have a hard time writing files to them, which means that you won't be able to save. Also, they tend to get corrupt often. Just buy the official 8mb cards. They can hold a good amount of game saves anyway.

A wired controller should do you fine and you'll certainly need at least one more. And I am in complete agreement with tenshodo13 about buying an official memory card.

Earlier today I went and bought a Sony card and I wound up talking to a customer rep in Radio Shack who is a big PS2 fan and I asked him about the memory cards by other manufactures. He related how he lost game information using third party cards. He said to stick to the name brands, especially Sony.

I suggest getting your kids the God of War games, that should feed their appetite.....

Also the Ratchet and Clank series is pretty good, fun and easy to learn/pick up and play.

Wired controllers work fine for the PS2 unless you have a certain need for wireless.

There are tons of games across genres and for every age group. You can also find them cheap at $20 or below (was recent 2 for $25 sale at circuit city) so building a nice collection doesn't take too much cash. I'm not sure what your kids like but these came to mind as fun games for all ages.

Kingdom Hearts
Twisted Metal: Black
Grand Turismo 3: A-Spec
Tony Hawk (3 was great IMHO)

Also the new 08 versions of several PS2 sports games are already at $20, again depending on tastes.

The supplied wired controller works great. A second wired Sony dual shock would be good if he's going to play any 2-player games (vs. or co-op)

Get the 2 pack of Sony brand 8MB cards, they're more reliable and that's enough space for playing 2-4 games at once.

Katamari Damacy
Final Fantasy X

Marvel Ultimate Alliance might be a good one if he's into comics.

Okami
Odin Sphere
Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2
Disgaea, GrimGrimoire, La Pucelle (same basic interface, so you'd probably be better off just getting one)
Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne
Final Fantasy X and XII
God of War 1 & 2
Guitar Hero variants
Valkyrie Profile 2 Silmeria
Xenosaga Series
Dragon Quest VIII
Magna Carta: Tears of Blood (bad reviews, but I still liked it)
Katamari series
Rogue Galaxy
.hack series

That should cover enough RPGs (and a few other types) to last until your 12 year old is ready for college.

Thanks for the help as always.......I can't wait for the late night no DOA verification when the boxes arrive......kingdom of hearts looks like they will get to play after dad finishes it

kingdom hearts is really good. i just got a used PS2 off the forums here and this is theonly game i've even put in so far. i have FFX and FFX-2 waiting to be played. but i cant tear myself away from KH. its not just a kids game, its just good.

Kingdom Hearts was an absolutely great game. I hear KH2 is good as well but, though I own it, I've yet to really play it. That's the only problem with the PS2 deals at this point: there are too many great, cheap games for it to play them all. (a good problem to have) Even a simple, well designed game like Hot Shots Golf 3 has sucked me in and provides hours upon hours of fun gameplay.

He will definitely enjoy God of War. If I was a 12 year old thats a game I'd love.

Keep in mind that it earned its M rating though 😛

I'd recommend Metal Gear Solid, but I don't think many 12 year olds would understand it. MGS is something YOU should play 🙂

Oh, Kingdom of Hearts, Final Fantasy, SPYRO.

heh, check my sig, lol.

but seriously, GTA games are great, ton of play time to keep the kids occupied. hear great things about god of war. maybe even shadow of the colossus?

I'm surprised you are the first to mention Shadow of the Colossus. That game was phenomenal; Ico was as well.

Other Great Games that didn't make the list:
Devil May Cry 1 and 3
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
Jak and Daxter (Similar to Ratchet and Clank)
Zone of the Enders Series (GREAT Mech series, especially the sequel)
Armored Core Series (a niche fanbase, some like it, but most don't)

Honestly I can't see a 12 year old enjoying those games though.
