Buying a PC for a college student. (Mine does games too) So it's not for me.

It actually will be an XMAS present. They really need a computer to do their schoolwork, but honestly I shouldn't spend more than a couple hundred on her.
I'm looking at pricewatch, comparing it to reselleratings to ensure I won't get screwed then said let me try eb@y.
I came across this, which looks like a great deal. PC
It will be less than 350 shipped.

On my own PC, I have XP. I have a licensed win2000 pro CD collecting dust, so I'll put that on there. I also have a msoffice lite lying around.

I have a like brand new 15"monitor lying around, so I can give her that.

What would you recommend?

Buy a Lindows computer. They go around $229 and then you add a monitor (which are hella cheap now). They will go office, email, and internet with the best of them. I think they come with a 1.3 Ghz processor, 128 RAM, and 20 GB hard disk if I am correct. Plus you have access to mucho free software via open source community. Here is a list of choices

Check the Hot Deals forum for 17" monitors that are offered for under $100 after rebate.

Depending on funding you can get a 15"LCD also for that price many places.

Mag and Sys are both used by clients of mine with no problems.

Most Casinos use ViewSonic LCDs - but they can afford to pay extra for the name and quality.
