i am going out this afternoon and may buy a new hp pc which comes pretty much with what i want except it has the intel shared graphics so i want a good video card. i won't be doing very heavy gaming but will be doing some manipulation of large image files. i'm looking for a good, mid-range card new or mint. the pc has an intel core 2 duo processor, 2gb ram, 250gb hd, dvd burner, media card reader, lan, xp media center, etc....thanks in advance for suggestions, i'll probably turn to the classifieds here to find the card!!

7900 GT or, preferably, 7900GTO if you can find one.

If you want to go ATI, get an x1950pro.

i think i'm going to spring for a pretty loaded dell e520 through my employer's epp program....as a light gamer who is more into photo manipulation (big files from my d200 raw images), will i notice much difference between a 7900 gs, 7900 gt or 1900xt? it looks like i can get a 7900 gs for $160 while the others are $200--worth the difference for me? also, any issues with fitting the cards in an e520 (the x1900xt looks pretty chunky to me)...thanks again...

quoted for truth. it means he agrees with the guy he quoted. With the needs you posted the 7900gs will work fine. Try to get one from eVGA and if the mainstream G80 cards come out within 3 months from now you can upgrade to one of those for basically free(if they introduce a 8 series card at the same price you paid for your 7900gs, otherwise you would just pay the difference). That way you will have a great performing card with dx10 support for vista.

Step-up makes a 7900GS a good idea; otherwise the x1900GT (single slot) is being offered at insane prices ($130 for open box at the egg).

hmmm....seems that x1900gt and 7900 are similarly performing cards..that's a great price. are there going to be missing cables that are a problem if i snag this (newegg website states there are no accessories that come with open box items)??

The x1900gt is about the same as a 7900gt, and noticably faster than the gs you were looking at. Not sure on the cable issue, though shouldn't your computer come with a monitor cable anyway? You shouldn't need any internal connectors (except maybe a molex-to-PCIE power adapter if your PSU isn't modern).

But note that eVGA's step-up is for pretty much everyone. Getting a 8600 down the line would really be a nice step -- the new architecture is a big advance, and getting to run DX10 is worth a lot.

just ordered the pc from dell, i'm pretty pumped as our existing compaq p4 machine is totally maxed out...i'm going to take a quick spin through the classifieds over the next day or two, but barring finding anything there think i'll just order an evga 7900 gs through newegg. after tax/shipping/rebate it will cost me about $175 but i'll have an upgrade path if something new comes out in the next few months. thanks a bunch for all the sage advice!!!

guys (and gals), i pulled the trigger on the e520 and just got an evga 7900gs. however 'houston we've got a problem'...the 7900gs has a supplemental power adapter with 2x4 pin plugs. the dell power supply only has one 4 pin plug on it, and that one is lashed to the back of one of my optical drives (hopefully it can be freed up). i contacted evga and they said i shouldn't use the card with that ps, but also were suggesting that i could get a 'splitter' to end up with two 4 pin plugs into the ps. what do you guys suggest i do...thanks, appreciate the help.

i guess the alternative would be to sell the 7900gs and buy a 7600gt which sounds like the fastest card evga makes that does not need the supplemental power adapter....would prefer to use the 7900gs if possible though....

if you still think it's ok, i can get a splitter from ebay for about $4, maybe worth a shot.

Funny, I have always been assuming that it meant "quit f-ing trolling". Guess I need to upgrade my lexicon.

What kind of CPU uses DELL e520 ?
I had chance get Dimension 5150(nice case) with just motherboard for$60 but after i find out DELL's motherboards working JUST with DELL's PSU and even HDD and Memory,
also CPU HSFan and cooler. NOTHING another. Then i decided change MOB with ASUS
but it JUST DOESN'T WORKS, everuthing is UPSIDE DOWN.
