Buying a new monitor. (LCD or CRT)?

I need a new monitor badly. I've been debating whether to go CRT again, or try a LCD for a change. Only problem is, most of the good ones only support 75 Hz max refresh rates (within a $400-450 budget). I play most games @ 1280*1024*85Hz, except those stubborn ones that don't support that resolution. LCD's support it, but only @ 75 Hz, unless I get one that has a 12ms or 16ms+ response time, which I want at least 8ms. So, my question is, how is 75 Hz on a LCD, and will I notice any lag/tears in games? Or should I just stick with a CRT and wait a while for LCD's to mature? Also, your welcome to suggest what to buy if you want 😉 Thanks

you shouldnt see too much diff with 75 and 85hz. lcd is the way to go. try the hyundai l90d, ag neovo f-419, 2005fpw when it comes on a 350-75 deal, fujiplus fp-988d, or a veiwsonic vx924. none of them are bad choices, so might as well choose what looks good to you.

What size are you looking for?
Look at the Dell 2001FP (20") or the VeiwSonic VA902b (19")
I know the veiwsonic has 8ms response time, not sure about the Dell.

For 24" get the Dell 2405FPW.

And if you're rich, get the Apple 30" Cinema Display. ($2999)

Yea smae here go with dell 2405fpw but just wait a while until there are new coupons that you could use to make a monitor that cost 560 to go down with coupon to 400

personally i'd rather buy a crt

i have a lcd downstairs and it has been killing my eyes
after just 15 min my eyes start watering and burning
with the crt in my room everything is fine though
could just be me

so i guess a lcd would be more "space-saving" and i can't see too much of a difference in resolution, refresh rates, etc.

so i guess a lcd would be a better choice

it's probably too bright.

75hz on an LCD is not comparable to a CRT. The LCD doesn't constatntly redraw the screen image from corner to corner like a CRT, hence the flickering at lower refresh rates on a CRT.

The LCD's image is a constantly, uniform display with only individual pixels changing as needed, hence the response time.

I have never used an LCD for gaming, but I know many that have the newer 8ms stuff and I've never heard a complaint in high framerate first person shooter type games.

These fit well within your price range and should be great.

19" Dell M992 Sony Trinitron FD Flat Display 1600x1200Max.Resolution 85Hz .24mm Shadow Mask $119.00 +$37.40 shipping

Free Delivery 21" Sony Trinitron FD Perfect Flat HP P1110 D2847A .24mm Aperture Grille 1800x1440 $229.00

*Free Delivery* 24" Sony Trinitron GDM-FW900 oem HP A7217A Perfect Flat Wide .23mm 2304x1440@80Hz 16:10 AR $479.00

these are refurbs, but Grade A refurbs which mean a 6 month exchange warranty and no defects on the screen or tube or case.

What are 'Reconditioned' products?
Reconditioned items have been inspected and are 100% functional. Unlike many other companies that just power up the monitor only! We test each monitor individually for brightness, color temperature, burn in, shadows (weak colors). We even rejuvenate the picture if necessary to bring the monitor back to original new color levels. The result is that you get a monitor which looks bright, crisp and sharp, not just a working monitor.

Grade-A
Monitor is in Great Working Condition.
No Cosmetic or Technical Defects.

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions. I wouldn't mind going with the Dell 2405FPW or 2100FP, but the response time on them are a little too high. I'm thinking going with the ViewSonic VX924 if I go LCD. If CRT, then probably a NEC AS120 or similar. Anyone else with opinions on LCD's, or suggestions? Thanks

For gaming it's a no brainer. CRT without a doubt. No comparison whatsoever and anyone who says otherwise probably can't tell the difference between an apple and an orange.

That's a pretty bold statement to make, especially considering how low response times are getting on LCDs. I don't know what the poster above was talking about with eyes strain, my eyes have never felt better while looking at an LCD. Not to mention the power, heat and space saving advantage. With all of these high-end video cards out that will support native resolutions of practically any LCD display, there is pretty much no reason to go with a CRT at this point. There are exceptions of course, but for the average consumer, LCD just makes the most sense. (Even with the extra initial cost, electricity isn't getting any cheaper 😉)

Lol 30 inch lcd for $3000 dollars. Wouldnt it be cheaper to buy two dell 24's and have an ultra wide display?

Yea and having to waste so much space . But the bezel would be huge like 5 inch .Their both the same not like it was 3 years ago. It all just matter what reason your gong to use your monitor, are you going to lans picking up a 60-80 pound crt is annoying to me . The best crt screen is the nec 21sb or something like that forgot but it like 600 bucks !!!
