Buying a new HD - Need help

I'm thinking of buying a WD Caviar Black 2TB (WD2001FASS) to replace 2 Caviar Black 640s running in RAID 0.

The RAID 0 setup houses my games. (I currently have a Super Talent 128 SSD for Win7 + apps.)

Will there be much of a performance difference between the two configurations? Would the 2TB with 64MB cache & dual processors trump the RAID setup?

Thanks-

Good question, ant the fastest way to find the answer, is to measure the speed of your current setup, and then compare your numbers to the numbers published in multiple reviewers blogs.

Results will be approximate since generation of controller and system specs will also factor into the equation. I'm gonna guess that a RAID0 will trump a single drive of the same RPM and vintage.

But its not the same vintage, the 640GB drive has 320GB platters and the 2TB has 500GB platters i believe, the density will make a big speed boost.

However in my honest opinion its going to be close because of the RAID. I think the RAID setup will have faster read/write speeds by a little but would expect the 2TB to have faster seeks because of the higher density. not worth the upgrade IMO.

And with the reliability of the 2TB drives still in question i would keep what you have.

BTW most benchmarks have shown only a small bump in game load times when going to a SSD which is many many times faster than mechanical drive so i dont think disk speed matters that much to load times if thats why you are thinking of the upgrade.
