Buying a new Hard Drive for my Dell Inspiron 9300

Hey guys,

I am planning on replacing my Dell Inspiron's 40gb hard drive with a 100gb drive, but I'm clueless as to how to do it. I have a few questions I need help with. First off, will any 2.5" drive fit, or are there only certain types that will work with certain vendors? Second, is there really a HUGE performance difference between 5400rpm and 7200rpm drives? Is there anything I should know about good vendors?

My desktop has a WD Raptor, which provides me sufficient space, so I've never really dealt with laptop drives before.

Any advice will really help, especially model suggestions. Thanks!

I upgraded the HD in my old Inspiron 9200 which is basically the same as yours. I believe most 2.5" drives will work and I have not had any issues with the WD Scorpio 80GB drive I upgraded to. I also bought an Inspiron HD tray from ebay so I could switch drives out easier. The way I had it was my 80GB drive was partitioned for Linux and XP while the 40GB was for XP only. I used the Linux/XP drive at work and when I got home I'd switch it out for the 40GB drive to play games.
