Buying a New Computer

Depends on what you are going to use the computer for.
If you are just going to surf the web and use office applications a dirt cheap Dell would be more than enough. Even those emachine deals would be sufficient. Ofcourse upgrading to more ram would be about the only thing left to do after getting that dirt cheap computer.

I play games and use more taxing applications so for me I will have to say customized self built computers are about the only way for me to go. Definitely won't be touching an Alienware, because those computers are WAYYY overpriced and have a flimsy plastic shell over the case.

The Dell XPS is pretty loud, lots of fan noise. I've had an XPS 400 for a little over a year now. No problems yet other than that the video, 6800 GTO, runs hot.

well I was refering mainly to the system built more so than the parts but this is what I was looking at getting:

- Pentium® D Processor 930 with Dual Core Technology (3.0GHz, 800FSB)
- 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz - 2 DIMMs
- 256MB PCI Express? x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) nVidia GeForce 6800
- 20 inch Ultrasharp 2007FP Digital Flat Panel
- 160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/ Native Command Queuing
- Sound Blaster® X-Fi? XtremeMusic (D), w/Dolby® Digital 5.1

Those are the basic parts I am looking to get. I was wondering also if there is a noteable difference between the Pentium D Processor 930 and the 820?

have a Dell laptop but I am looking more at a good desktop. Maybe there are some sites that you can configure what you want other than on dell.com

get it cheaper at the dell outlet, you can find some great deals there. i got mine there for less than 1400 about half a year ago.

QFT, if you are patient you can find some very good deals on there. I got my current computer on there, and I simply could not beat the deal by buying the parts separately, assuming I went with Intel.

If not Dell, what brand then (assuming I'm not building it myself)?

Hypersonic pc, Falcon NW, Voodoo PC (they are a bit overpriced though), the list goes on.

The 820 sometimes overheats, explodes, and kills the user and/or his cat. Or at least it overheats and throttles itself.

What games? The video card is underpowered for Oblivion (see the Oblivion GPU article on the main AnandTech forum) but is OK for older games at 1024x768.

QFT! This has happened before! A guy had a comp with a 820, and he left his comp open and running overnight. The cat walked up to the comp and started sniffing around when the chip blew up. Killed the cat and flying pieces of shrapnel from the computer case severely injured the man. Intel is being sued right now. Poor cat 🙁
