Buying a new computer, which video card?

Yea yea I know this has been posted before, but I'm buying a new computer and trying to decide on the video card. It's basically the only thing that I am deciding on now. I'm thinking either radeon 9800 pro 128/256 or the geforce 5900 ultra. It's an extra 130 for the 256 mb version of the radeon and an extra 180 for the geforce ultra. Is it worth an extra 130 bucks for the enhanced performance that I'll see within the next two years of games? I know it doesn't help right now, but will it help a lot in the future?

thanks in advance

I'm of the opinion it's a bad time to purchase a video card. If you can, go cheap to get you by until Doom 3, Halflife 2 and whatnot hit the streets. If you gotta buy now and don't want to buy again soon, go ALL-out. Any of the cards you mention should handle the stuff coming out this year.

I agree 100%

yea well, i'm going to college in less than a month, and it requires a computer, so I have to buy now. so, I guess I should go with the radeon 9800 pro 256 mb version...?

no the 256 mb is a complete waste of money. there is no performance differance between it and the 128mb radeon 9800. even in doom3 with 4X FSAA and 8X AF it does not make a differance. click me pure marketing my friend. get the 9800 np and o/c to 9800 pro levels.

I'd say save yourself some cash that you can use for alcohol in college, and get a 9700 non-pro =) It'll run every game that exists today with pleanty of speed.

if you can find a radeon 9700 Pro for 249 at Best Buy i would try to pick that up

then radeon 9800 NP if that is not available then 9800 pro if you can't find either of those

I don't think there are any new video cards expected to hit the market before Doom 3 or Half Life 2, please correct me if I'm wrong?

I've been trying to hold off on getting a new video card as well, but think I might just go ahead and order a Radeon 9800 pro 128. $355 shipped. That's a lot of money, but I doubt it will drop by more then $100 in the next 6 months...
