Buying a new computer, when will Vista coupons be available?

I'm in the market for a new laptop, but before I buy one I've heard rumors (from the hot deals forum at slickdeals.net) that some PC manufacturers will start including vouchers to upgrade to Vista when it comes out. I think they did the same thing when Xp came out. Alot them are now avertising their PCs are "Vista Compatible". They are supposedly starting in Oct. Any one have more solid info on this, cause I will definately hold off on purchasing one if its true.

While I have not heard anything about vista vouchers, i would not doubt it - and if you are worried about upgrading to vista I would hold off on buying a computer for a month or two.

If Microsoft and/or PC manufacturers don't come up with a way to upgrade to vista for free or cheap with a newly purchased PC, the holiday 2006 shopping season for PCs will be dead - everyone will want to wait until PCs are available with windows vista on them, which will likely be after the holiday season, in january or february. That would spell disaster for not only the PC manufacturers, but also the retailers like bestbuy and circuit city.

...in short, I haven't seen any, but i expect them soon.

I am also in the market of purchasing a laptop. And trust me, I have gotten to the point where I am at the checkout to buy the system, but I tell myself that Vista is coming soon, and I would be making a huge mistake if I bought a laptop now. So I am waiting for Vista to come out, and then I will purchase a laptop bundled with Vista.

Is a Xbitlabs/DigiTimes article good enough for you? But from what I've been hearing, this free upgrade will only be for Media Center Edition.

Do I personally believe that a coupon will come? Yes, enough for me to also hold off on buying a laptop until the coupon comes out.

I sure would not buy a computer with XP on it now---if I planned to upgrade to Vista as soon as possible---without some steep discount on vista in the form of a voucher.

But then again---one of my two existing computers probably can't pull vista---the other one can---but I will have to see some compelling reasons to run vista before I shell out that much money to buy vista----greedy Bill does not need any of more of my money.

Good points all! But have you considered the fact that the boys (and girls) at MS have a consistant track record of producing fairly flawed first generation products? I mean Windows 3.0 quickly morphed into Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and 98 had second revisions, and of course Windows XP has SP1 and SP2. Are you sure you want to be one of the first to adopt a new version of Windows? It can be a real mine field.
Just playing the devil's advocate here, but while I have a system running Vista RC1 my main/workhorse computer has XP SP2 on it (and probably will continue to until Vista experiences it's initial 'shakedown' period. Fool me once (twice, well actually several time) Bill, but it ain't happening again. Stick with XP.

Thanks for the info.

I've been using the Vista beta for the past couple of months, and while its still a little unstable and my printer doesn't have drivers for it yet, I still like it. I'll probably do the XP/VISTA dual boot thing, but the main thing I want to avoid is paying extra for a OS later on.

While that may be true most of the updates (at least for XP) have been security updates. As long as you know what you are doing most of the time you won't be vulnerable anyway.
