Hey guys,

Well, my dingy 97 Camry is ready for replacement. I've considered a few candidates. Max budget is about $200/month for a payment, which means about $12-13k max.

I _really_ enjoy driving, but I'm reluctant to get a pure "drivers car" for now. I commute 35 miles one way, every day. I want something comfortable, moderately luxurious, and hopefully reliable. I want something that I can shove around a bit (especially on Highway 17, if you bay area folks know what I'm talking about), but nothing too extreme. The "mid-luxury sport" category seems to be what I'm going for...

1) 1999 Audi A6 2.8 Quattro
This sucker is loaded. Every option. Very comfortable and supple interior. It's understated yet attractive, if a bit bulbous for my tastes. The 190hp 2.8L is thirsty and not too powerful, especially considering the weight and the Quattro system. It has a tiptronic automatic, and this is all well and good. The car is owned by a friend of mine, and it's in good mechanical condition, and has been well looked after by a local Audi / VW specialist. There are a few cosmetic issues, none of which are huge, but the dash computer display between the speedo/tach is a little goofed up, which would drive me insane - for sure. :) 120k on the clock.

$6k, + $700 to fix the ABS system.

Pretty good deal, but it's a bit heavy for my tastes and much larger than I need. I drive myself 95% of the time.

2) 2003 Infiniti G35
Also loaded. Leather, premium sound, sunroof, you name it. The G35 is much more what I'm looking for. It's got a 280hp 3.5L V6, rear wheel drive, tiptronic, and a good suspension. It's a coupe, it's light-ish and attractive, etc... I'm test driving it tonight. The engine is thirsty, which does kind of suck, but it's not much worse than the Audi, and has a lot more power, so thats okay. I don't know the guy who owns it, but the Carfax is clean. 95k on the clock.

$11.5k.

Also a very solid deal. Excited the most by this one

3) 199_ BMW 325is
My aunt owns this one. It's a potential sleeper. I think it's a mid 90s model, not sure. She lives in California less than a month out of the year, and it's been barely used since 1996, when she and my uncle started living (mostly) in Hawaii. She's impeccable at taking care of things, and I'm sure this car looks brand new, like everything else she owns. Positive there are no mechanical issues. That would _not_ be tolerated by her. The 325is is kind of halfway between the Audi and the G35, and has the potential to be very cheap. Exactly how cheap, not sure. She wants to sell it I know, but she hasn't gotten back to me on a price. I would imagine it would be quite low - maybe 5-6k. Since they are very wealthy, I could likely pay them directly instead of getting a loan, which could be even easier / cheaper. We'll see on that one.

For now, the G35 has me green-eyed. I'm going to drive it tonight and see.

What do you guys think?

I would go w/ the infiniti. I wouldn't trust an audi w/ 100k+ miles on it. Its hard to comment on the BMW w/o a price or mileage.

ive been eyeing a g35 myself. dunno if youve driven one or not, but i LOVE being behind the wheel of one. make sure to check up on the g35 forums (g35driver.com i think?). Some of the G's have an oil consumption thing, so id make sure you watch for it.

There is something wrong with the Infinity if it only has 95k miles and they are asking $11.5k.

The Edmund's True Market Value has it at about $14.7k for private party value.

Well I got back from the test drive.

It's a sedan, not a coupe. Totally my mistake. The car is in overall good condition, with a few blemishes.

1) The CD changer is b0rked. Not such a big deal to me, I'm going to put my own system in it anyway - but still this reduces the value. Tape / Radio still works fine
2) The tires aren't quite right for this car, per the dealer's own admission. They are fine, and in good shape, but they're not low profile like this car is designed for.
3) The rear window is a little difficult to see out of. Hard to explain, it's just rather blurry. You tell me?
4) They don't have the keyless entry fob. I will have to get a new one. I hope the keyless entry system works :D The manual key works fine

The car is fucking fast as shit. I stood on the gas on 280 and was at 90mph in a heartbeat with plenty of grunt left over. It's a rocket ship. Definitely a fan there! The interior is pretty nice, it has dual power leather seats. The Infiniti analog clock is fucking stupid, but whatever... No sunroof - I was confused :)

He wants 11,5 - which is the KBB value for one in "good" condition. I would say this is in "fair" condition, because of the issues. The body / paint is perfect, and there are no mechanical defects. The KBB for "fair" is 10,2 - so I'm going to start him off at 10, and maybe bargain to 10,5. We'll see.

I like the car, that's for sure. I drove it home today and was very pleased with its performance. I think the tires are affecting the handling a little - and I'm not used to it. We'll see. New tires will probably be in order, but that's not a huge deal. Michelin Pilots I hear are good fit for this car? :)

Anyway, I'm pretty stoked. I might hold out, but it's not a bad deal.

I have to add, I test drove a G35 Coupe when looking for a new car for myself. I was terribly disappointed with how slow it was. My fathers old Bonneville SSEi felt way faster. I was not happy with the way it handled, I did not like the transmission, and whats the point of having 6th gear in a so called powerful car when it still turns over 3000rpm on the highway. Also very disappointed by the inability to defeat the traction control.

I wish I never test drove the G35, I had such high hopes because I think they look and sound incredible, and actually driving one completely ruined it for me. I would not recommend it to anyone. As well, I thought for a luxury car the interior was sub par with an ugly dash arrangement.

Blurred rear window is probably crappy tint plastic that got too hot too many times.

Yeah thats what I figured.. I'll get that taken care of one way or another.

So, I put $500 deposit on the Infiniti, and I talked him down to $10,500 total - about $11,700 out the door. I feel like I got a solid deal.

I'm going to take it to a trustworthy mechanic for inspection, and see if there are any mechanical problems. They guy at the dealership said that if there were any problems I could get a refund. The deposit was just to hold the car in case I got cold feet. Anyone in the south bay area know of an infiniti specialist?

I did discover that the windshield wiper squirters don't work, but they promised to fix that for me before I actually buy the vehicle.

I researched the keyless entry system, and it's really easy. The fobs are all over e-bay. You just get a fob, and re-programming it to your car is stupid easy and doesn't require any tools and whatnot.

The CD player will be expensive, but I plan on putting a nice aftermarket system in here, figure at least a full set of components up front, a 12" in the back with ~300W+, a decent deck with native iPod / iPhone interface + bluetooth (if such a thing is possible with the iPhone), and probably upgraded coaxial speakers in the back and the rear deck as well. The dash has to be modified to accept a double-din pocket. The conversion kits are about $250 to do it, and there's a little work involved ;) I will probably have a local car audio wizard do it all for me after I get the parts picked out.

For now, tape adapter -> MP3 player FTW :)

I'll get nice new tires eventually.

I feel like I got a great deal. What do you guys think?

Thanks

That audi is overpriced. I just picked up 2000 2.7T with less miles loaded for 7400 out of the door. Have the full maintenance history too.

Nice car. There is one locally in great shape as well and I would love to have it (it's even in my price range) but alas I need something with better gas mileage. But boy was it a nice car.

Enjoy yours!!

:D :D thanks guys - this is one happy Misfit...

I will break out a bottle of the good stuff once the financing clears, and the dealer / reputable mechanic comes back to me with a smile and a clean bill of health. When that happens... PICS!

Find out what your aunt wants for the 325is. If the miles aren't bad, I'll take it :)

G35 owners. One question ... any way to improve gas mileage at all??

I love the one I found but the low gas mileage is a concern.

g35 mileage is really dependant on style too.

You can get like 28mpg if you nurse it on the freeway at a steady 75mph or so.

The 325 is sooo cherry, it's got less than 60k on it - 1993. Looks brand new.

Too bad she wasn't looking to sell it :(

Anyway, I bought the G35 today. She's gorgeous! Big fan. Pics coming
