I currently live in FL, but will be moving to Portland at the end of next month. I have a 2003 BMW 325i with ~80k miles on it. My wife and I are wanting to know if we should buy a new car here in FL and drive it over to Portland or drive the BMW over and buy a new one there since there is no sales tax. Any advice?

No sales tax in Oregon, not sure if that works for cars as well.

We want something that gets better gas mileage and can hold our dogs.

Get an Outback / Forester with a "Keep Portland Weird" bumper sticker - you'll look like a native in no time.

That's more common on the Prius, which will also make you blend in. If you get an Outback, be prepared for people to mistake you for a lesbian.

Under no circumstance should you get a Hummer. You will be killed by the natives.

Buy in Oregon. There's no sales tax and as far as I could tell, dealerships are more desperate for your money so they'll give you a good deal. I got mine 15% below invoice cuz I went shopping on a rainy day. haha!

Oregon FTW. No sales tax and tags are only $50 for 2 years.

Car sales are a lot more competitive in florida. I'd make sure if you can make up the difference (6.5%) in Oregon before I'd say it'd be a better deal.
