Buying a new car - couple of stupid questions

I'm purchasing my first new vehicle, and because of the way the salesman has phrased some conversations I have these two questions:

1) Sales tax. The tax that I pay on the car is just the regular ol' sales tax percentage that I pay for everything, right? So here in Indiana I'd be paying 6% over the cost of the car. The guy made it sound like there were some extra taxes that the government makes them collect.

2) Social security number. I'm paying for this car partially in cash, and partially with financing from my credit union. So I'll be showing up to purchase the car holding cash and a check from my CU. Does the dealership then still have a need to collect my social security number? I don't want to give it out unless I absolutely HAVE to.

Thanks for the help.

1. Registration, title fees, etc are technically taxes.
2. I wouldnt give it out.

I dinno about the states, but up here they add tire tax, sometimes freight, PDI. Only if the dealership wants to tack on as much as they can tho.

As for your SS#, I don't think they need it... Your basically paying cash as far as they are concerned.

do not give them your SS. if you have the cash, why not give that to the bank and pay the dealership entirely with CU financing?

A check from your CU is cash to the dealership. They have no reason to see your social security number.

probably not, but they most likely aren't charging you any more than it would cost you to do it some other way, they probably are prohibited by state law from profiting on those any more than any other license agency charges.

but in my experience most dealers charge a "document fee", which is mostly money in their pocket, but it's almost impossible to get them to waive it.

varies from state to state. just make sure you pay for only fees that are deemed mandatory... state-set title and license fees prices

you pay sales tax on the finalized price of the car. after that its yearly taxes.

SSN, you shouldnt need to give it to them at all as you arent financing through them.

and as for registration, you dont have to do it through the dealer. just make sure they arent charging you more then it would cost you if you did it your self. just saves you from having to go to the dmv your self.

If it is a franchise dealer, most likely. Since the car is new, there hasnt been a paper title generated for it yet as the "owner" is the mfr or a finance company. If the car were used and on consignment you might be able to just snag a paper title.

Let me guess - they're trying to squeeze you for $500 or something for an "administrative fee" or some BS like that.

The last 2 states in which I have bought cars do not charge regular sales tax. (North Carolina had a lower % rate; Arizona has an annual vehicle use tax you pay with tag renewal based in the value of the car.)

2 of my friends went in recently to purchase vehicles w/ outside financing, and they needed their SS#'s in CA to run a 2 liner to verify identity and whatnot, they said it was something new, dont' know if it was bs or not, but they took the 2 liner, checked it, took the check and said have a great time w/ the car!!
