Hey,

I'm looking to buy a GigaByte 8KNXP, 2.8Ghz P4, and 1GB memory combo.

Can you guys recommend a good site (price/relaibility) that will connect and test before shipping?

Thanks,
Matt

Mwave.com

You can check their resellarratings, it speaks for itself. Do you plan to overclock?

Do you plan to overclock?

No... but it's a possibility as it becomes a little easier for non-experts like me. ;)

My primary use will be editing and burning DVDs of home video and digital pictures. Would overclocking give me some advantage in this... I thought it was mostly for gamers?

Does this make a diffrence in who I buy from?

Thanks,
Matt

Get an Intel motherboard for cheaper for the 865, esp the 875 board if you can afford it. Does it matter, does sh*t happens? I've been buying stuff online for more than 5 years now, good customer service is worth it. Esp when you're not on hold for 2hs etc, can't talk to a live person, etc.

I think you misunderstood me.

I *know* it makes a difference who you buy from (that's why I posted this message)

You asked if I would be overclocking... I was wondering if *this* made a difference in who I buy from.

Anyway, I'm getting the GigaByte 8KNXP with a 2.8 GHz P4. Have you heard anything good/bad about this board?

Thanks for the replies.

Abit and Asus boards are famous for overclocking. They have more options for tweaking i.e. voltage, incremental overclocking. I own Gigabyte 845E board, I wouldn't buy one again. Just too many weird issues for me. Gigabyte does have good reputation for being stable but not for overclocking. I see overclocking as hobby now. Most people do it cause they want to see how far they can push the CPU speed without compromising stablity.

Most of the memebers seen to be having good luck with 2.4C for overclocking. From what I've read, the higher the CPU speed for Pent 4, the less chance of overclocking.

For your needs, I think 2.8 will be fine.

If you goto Anandtech's main page, there are some decent articles on 865/875 boards. Its under motherboard.

Hey, I agree w\ Newbiepcuser. I went w\ Gigabyte for the first time on my latest mobo purchase (the 8INXP) and I wont be going Gigabyte again. I had several probelms with games & video drivers, OS's and still have some booting problems now & then.

I went MSI my past 4 builds\upgrades and they worked flawlessly. I cant say that about Gigabyte, and all that hype around that 8INXP sure wasnt worth the $255 I payed. (and btw, Im not even OC'ing it)

As far as good sources to buy from... as mentioned alrdy www.mwave.com is good, newegg.com,www.googlegear.com I have all dealt with personally. Mwave & Googlegear are quick on their returns\RMA's etc.

If you need me I'll call you.

Son of b#tch, those are my same problems with my Gigabyte board I have boot problems so often too, some games, etc......I updated to latest BIOS, updates, etc. Using Antec True Powersupply, Mushkin with Samsung chips. I fell for the Gigabyte hype too.

Well,

I bit the bullet and bought the GigaByte board (not in spite of all your posts... just before I saw them :))

Anyway... what do you guys think I should go with as far as a video card? Like I said before, I won't be gaming or 3-D modeling or anything like that. But I will be editing video (nothing special, just cuts and stuff) and digital images.

I'm looking to save some money here... any recomendations?

Budget? Bah!

I've got no budget, per se, but I think I'd like to stay sub $100.

More generally, though, for what I want to do (video edit) what should I be looking for (or not care about) in a video card? Memory, etc...

If you were to buy used, check the For Sale/trade forums. Lots of good deals there. Just buy form people with good heatware, etc.

You can probably get Geforce 4 ti 4200 etc.

Lets don't get off topic and help this guy. There is no reason to mention parts of your body.

While I appeciate your "help"... my new Gigabyte motherboard is arriving this afternoon, so I doubt that I'll swapping it out in the near future. If I have problems, I'm sure I'll let you know you were right... but I doubt that every GB owner has had problems. Hopefully, I'll be in that group.

Back to the Video Card. Is there anything special I should look for? For my relatively basic needs (video editing) how much memory do I need? What about cache? Does the chipset make much difference for my needs?

Now... let me throw another one at you guys: Case/Power Supply. I've decided that I need to upgrade these, too (of course ;)) How big of a power supply should I get? Is 350W enough? Seems like a pretty big jump in price to the 400+ supplies.

Thanks,
Matt

PS. I ordered the Mobo/CPU/Memory combo from www.mwave.com yesterday at about 2:15PM and it's scheduled to be here (North Carolina) before noon today... not bad, eh? I hope they did the install/testing that I paid $9 for in that short amount of time. So far I'm pretty impressed with MWAVE...

A good name brand 350 watt powersupply should do like Antec, Enermax, etc.

Video editing, I suggest you get video card that can do dual display. A lot of cards come with this feature already. You'll probably need it in the long run. Maybe an ATI card with dual display support or a Geforce 4 etc.
