I been reading all kinds of bad stuff about the IBM 45gig 75GXP drives, part number 07N3931; that they fail miserably within 6 months of use. Just my luck to own 4 of them and one died this week. Kinda p'ed off, the IBM smart monitoring software didnt even warn me of failures. The drive made a loud hissing/whining noise for a few days, then just died.

So, I sent the drive back to IBM, hope they wont send me another bad one :( I'm now looking to buy another large ide hd for a second computer i'm building, which do i get?

IBM 60gig 7200rpm 60gxp, part #07N6655
-or-
Maxtor DiamondMax 5400rpm 80gig, part #98196H8

Asides from the price and speed of the drives, would like to know what you recommend, yes , i read storagereview, wasnt much help.

My main concern is having a drive that wont die on me, reinstalling just blows :)

Thanks!

I would get the IBM 60GXP if it's gonna be used as your main drive. It's one of the fastest IDE drives around. However, if it's only gonna be for storage, go for the extra 20GB of the Maxtor.

I'd go for the Maxtor for the simple reason that so many people seem to be having problems with the IBM's, including a number of 60GXP's.

i have not heard any problems with the 60GXP. Its fast, quiet and IBM. However, as mentioned above, if you are only using it for storage (e.g. MP3's) then the Maxtor would be ideal.

80 GB Western Dee-Gital (7200 AhrPeeEm) or 100 GB MaxStor (5400 AhrPeeEm).

The ibm is cheaper, much faster, quieter, and more reliable IMHO. I am in the same situation. I have a 30gig now, and I am going to buy another HD for more storage. I am going with the IBM 60GXP 7200 60gb because it is cheap at Newegg($153), and it would make a great main drive if I ever have to reformat everything if my OS goes to poop.

Maxtor beats the IBM (both 60 GB 7200 AhrPeeEm) in many tests - see StorageReview.com for more info.

Even if IBM is quieter, you won't hear the drive with your Delta cooling fan :)

36GB Cheetah Fibrechannel in a 10 disk array!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh wait, you want this for your home comp.. hehehe..

I'd say go for a 60GB 7200rpm drive. Either ibm or maxtor. IBM seems to be the latest company to be hit w/ the HD failure rate (75GXP).. the 60's *should* fix it. Now, maxtor had some bad rep before, but seem to have improved.

if the drive is gonna be your main one, don't get a 5400rpm drive. any ibm (60gxp) or maxtor 7200rpm hddrive will perform well.

i've noticed that the WD 80GB 7200rpm (w/ 2mb buffer) go for the same price as a Maxtor 80GB 5400rpm drive....

that's pretty damn cheap.
