Buying a Laptop

My friend is thinking of buying a laptop for a home office. My friend wants me to help him out so I am bringing the problem to you. He needs a laptop that is around 15" (widescreen), P4 (yea i know), at least 512MB Ram, at least 80GB hard drive, wireless capabilities, and a memory card reader. Something like that for under $700-$800. If we could buy a laptop that is dual core for under $800, then that would be helpful. Remember this is for work/personal use, not for gaming. Thanks for the help.

hsn.com had a nice gateway with all the spec u wanted.....but i think it was amd 939 it was on last night...so u could check it out

P4 is a really stupid choice for a laptop. An intel Centrino, Core Solo or Core Duo runs as fast or faster without bursting into flames, burning down your house and killing the family cat or dog. An AMD Turion isn't as nice as Core Duo but at least Snuffles will be alive comes the dawn.

Dell has had perfect systems for him during their "10 days of deals," Friday was a Centrino $499 laptop, Saturday-Sunday was a Core Duo $699 laptop.

One of the Sunday paper ads had a similar Compaq for $699 but I forget what store (Office D, Officemax, Stapes, Best Buy or Circuit City, try their websites).

Need a somewhat similar laptop as OP noted (it's for my Dad).

starting tomorrow, OD will have the HP DV5000T notebook (config #03017135, LINK) w/ the following specs for $499.99 AR

Base System HP Pavilion dv5000t with HP Pavilion dv5000t
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) Solo processor T1350 (1.86 GHz)
Notebook Display 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen
Memory 1GB Memory (2x512MB)
Operating System Genuine Windows XP Home Edition
Hard Drive 40GB 5400RPM Hard Drive
Optical Drive DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
Video Card Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 950 - Core
Modem/PC Card Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
Battery 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
TV and Entertainment None
Multifunction hp deskjet f380 all-in-one
Business Productivity Microsoft Works/Money

Can anyone suggest which upgrades might be worth it (for example, upgrading to the Intel Core Duo processor T2250 (1.73 GHz) for an additional $46 )?

tia

EDIT: the laptop will mostly be used for general office stuff (word processing, etc) and demonstrating DVD's to students

I second this. P4 is probably the worst possible choice you could make for a laptop, he definitely should go P-M or Core solo/duo.

FYI your link does not work directly anymore.

Anyway, for the usage you have described I think these specs would be sufficient. For $46 bucks though I would just take the bump to the 1.73 Duo. May want to bump the battery if he is planning on carrying it around a lot, or is often away from easy outlet access. That hard drive seems small, but for what he is doing it is probably good enough.

Cheers, KT

i'll take your advice on the bump up to the 1.73 Duo and think about the hd size (i think 40GB will be sufficient for him, though.

thanks KeithTalent 🙂
