If your dad will be using that laptop as a business machine, then it's a no-brainer which one he should get.

IBM ThinkPad T42. Light and portable, powerful (Pentium-M Dothan), excellent build quality, good battery life, and legendary IBM support that will fix damage to the laptop, accidental or otherwise.

The only problem with the T42 (I love 'em, don't get me wrong :)) is that they are kind of expensive. Come back with a price range and how mobile he needs it to be. If its going to sit at a desk 24/7, then we have a lot more options :)
If he wants to have decent battery life & to take it around with him, we will need to change our approach ;)
