I've never bought one before, so is there anything in particular I should look for?

Get one with a combination. You can never lose your combination (unless you have bad memory). My college roommate loses his keys all the time so it puts his notebook key lock in jeopardy.

Can't think of any specific brands, just make sure that it's a good thick steel cable.

kensington locks seem to be the most prefered. I suggest checking out their site to see if your laptop is compatable with their locks.

I don't get why would someone lock their laptop. They can just steal it from you unless somehow you have it locked to with no ends to pull out.

Figure out how to use it properly before attaching it to your laptop and locking it. I had one girl call in asking for help because she couldn't figure out how to get the lock off. Unfortunately for her, I didn't know the particulars of her lock and we don't make house calls.

well, i've been taking my laptop to the library to study (it has WiFi) and everytime i leave to go to the bathroom, i get a little paranoid leaving my laptop there. i don't really want to pack up all my stuff just to goto the bathroom. i figure a laptop lock is better than nothing at all.

I was going to poo-poo on laptop locks until I read what/when you're using it. That's a perfect scenario for that. A public place..nobody's gonna mess w/it. The laptop lock is like the club on a car; not hard to take off, but they need the time and the cover...easier to pick on unprotected targets.
