i have an old tomtom one and an garmin 255WT. I hated the garmin. I would rather not have the traffic and get with the tom tom instead. Garmin's GUI is better than the old tomtom, but everything else is worse. the lady with british accent sounds like a man, it doesn't tell you which way to go when there's a fork on the highway, the traffic reroute is hit and miss. there's one time it told me to get off the highway when there's no jam down the road.
Garmin; I have a 205W. The wider screen isn't all that useful - it's better for looking things up or typing in addresses, but useless at the map screen.
I definitely disagree with that. I guess maybe if you spend all of your time in metropolitan areas it's OK but if you ever head to any areas with spotty or no coverage you've got a brick for a GPS unit. From personal experience: Smart Phone with GPS > Stand Alone GPS. That's simply because it's connected to the internet. Easier to search stuff, and maps are kept constantly up to date. Mind you there's a monthly fee for that.
After doing some homework, I decided to go with the Nuvi 1390T. Found a deal online for $199.99, free shipping.
Quick question for the experienced Garmin customers: how often do they update their maps, and will the unit need to be updated out of the box?

You can find a Garmin 1450LMT for that.
This for sure. Honestly, I doubt you can go wrong with either a TomTom or a Garmin. Head to a store and try them out.get something with lifetime maps.
I got a 200w a couple of years ago when I opened a credit card, went to update the maps last week and I can basically buy a brand new unit for about the same as a single map update.
