I'm picking it up before I fly to Vancouver next Thursday.

I hope I'm making the right choice! It'll be the first portable game system I've ever owned.

edit: any thoughts on a 2nd game to pick up?

New Super Mario Brothers and Mario Kart are my favorites.

Elite Beat Agents and Advance War DS are both solid. My guilty pleasure is Nintendogs, but don't tell anyone. You also wouldn't want to play that out in public unless you want to be seen yelling trick commands at your DS.

You getting the Black & Red DS? :Q

If they're in stock, you bet!

Overall, get the 4 reborn classics - Zelda, New SMB, Mario Kart and Tetris. You won't regret those 4 games, and you should consider looking into getting an R4DS or signing up for GameFly.

Advance Wars DS.

But before you buy that, you might as well try one of the two Advance Wars games from the GBA - there were some improvements in Advance Wars DS, but not significant enough that if you didn't like the GBA versions you might like the DS version. Not to mention the GBA games are great games in their own right, so you ought to play them too if you like the series. :)

IMO, the best games for the DS are the two Castlevania games. I absolutely loved both of them. The problem is that the first one has been out of production for a while... and I'm not sure about the second. So they could be difficult to find.

I went to Futureshop and picked up a crimson DS lite w/ Zelda. Because I was getting Zelda, they threw in a free case and I somehow got another free game ("Quickspot"). They didn't have any of the other titles I was looking for, so I may stop by BB or another Futureshop before I leave. I hope I can get a copy of Advanced Wars and, thanks Thraxen, I'll keep a lookout for Castlevania as well!

I played Zelda for about 45 min last night. The control scheme is impressive. Moving Link around is so easy and the way the stylus is used is really creative. I'm impressed with the in-game graphics (except for Link himself, he looks like an idiot) and, while the cut-scene graphics aren't great, they somehow make me feel right at home.

The DS was my first video-game purchase since 1996 or 97 (whenever the Playstation came out) and, so far, I'm loving every minute of it.

Cheers!:D

edit: Can someone point me in the direction of a good DS / DS homebrew forum?

Good to hear, we expect to see you more often around the console forum! I did not respect the DS until I started working at Gamestop for a brief stint, now I see that it's actually an amazing little handheld.

I've played about 2 hours of Zelda now. It's really fun. As I said in my previous post, the controls are amazing, the graphics are great, and the plot is typical Zelda fun.

I'm very pleased. The only thing that isn't pleasing is my inability to find a copy of Advance Wars DS.

Well I picked up a copy of Zelda on Tuesday, but I haven't gotten a chance to play it yet as the GF loves it :p

I also love Zelda. Though I just played about 30 minutes without saving and then my DS shut off from no battery charge remaining. I wish it had a better battery information display...like maybe a warning one minute before it expects to die?

I just bought my DSL last weekend (crimson with BA2) and I love it. I also picked up NSMB and have been playing that nonstop. I think Elite Beat Agents will be the next game I buy. I'm also looking at Trauma Center and the Phoenix Wright games. Overall though, I really love my DS Lite.

Um, the battery light turns orange before it's going to die... you haven't noticed that?

The light for low battery is red...Orange light is on during charging.

If you see the light on red, you should be charging it. You can still play and charge at the same time too.

Honestly, NSMB was a great disappointment, perhaps the only game I truly regret buying for the DS. Much better fan-made Mario games are on the internet for free. However, that is just my sole opinion.

Great titles include...
Mario Kart (how could you go wrong with this?)
Pokemon (if you are into that kind of thing...[I AM!])
Advanced Wars (great game)
Etrian Odyssey (only if you are into hardcore dungeon crawling that just requires countless wasted hours)
I found Castlevania: Portait of Ruin to be uninventive and almost boring, but I haven't tried the other Castlevania DS game.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations, coming out later this month, is supposed to surpass all the other Phoenix Wright games, which are considered solid in their own right.

If you like puzzle type of games, you may enjoy..
Tetris (a classic)
Picross (IMO the most enjoyable puzzle game on the DS)
Brain Age
Meteos

Looks the same to me, TBH. Orange both times, with the second light on during charging.

I've been playing Worms: Open Warfare 2 quite a bit. I'm planning on picking up Advanced Wars, Zelda and Tetris at some point too.

Other games I liked:
Mario Kart DS
Metroid Prime: Hunters
New Super Mario Bros
Mario 64 DS
Brain Age

gbatemp.net is a pretty good one. Just remember that you need additional hardware to use homebrew in your DS but its really worth it, there is even Linux for the DS!
